Should I watch it: Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip

Big budget, a message to the black community, but still the typical Tyler movie — Overhyped

Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip

The movie is a polarizing, R-rated spinoff from the Madea franchise. It premiered on Netflix on February 13, 2026. While it quickly became the #1 movie on the platform, critics and fans are deeply divided over its relentless profanity, racial slurs, sexual themes and tonal shifts. For a big-budget movie, for me, the movie is overhyped and might not be worth watching. But hold on, read till the end, watch it, then come back and comment if the review did justice.

The Plot:

The film follows Brian Simmons (Tyler Perry), who realises he has raised his son B.J. (Jermaine Harris) in such a sheltered, “post-racial” environment that the teen is dangerously out of touch with his black roots or culture. To remedy this, Brian reluctantly lets his foul-mouthed, hard-drinking father, Joe Simmons (also Perry), take B.J. on a cross-country college tour and enlighten him on his heritage.

Key Strengths

• A “Black History Lesson in Disguise”: Beneath the raunchy, vulgar and sexualized humor, the film serves as a travelogue of Black history. The duo stops at significant Civil Rights landmarks and historical sites, providing a “crash course” for the oblivious B.J..
• Fresh Lead Character: For the first time, Joe is the star rather than a side character. Joe is one of the main characters; obviously, Tyler Perry will always be the main role in Madea movies.
• Comedic Highlights: The film features standout moments, including a “Matrix-style” bar fight against a racist biker gang and a raucous soundtrack featuring Memphis soul icons.

The Not Good Parts

Despite its popularity, the film has faced significant backlash:

• The “Hard R” Rating: Many long-time fans were shocked by the extreme level of vulgarity, including frequent “N-words,” explicit sexual language, and even scenes in a brothel (which I personally found unnecessary). Some viewers felt this “overshadowed” the meaningful history lessons. For a movie that wants to spotlight black heritage, the vulgarity and explicit themes were a low point in the movie.
• Technical Critiques: Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb were split 50/50. Common complaints included uneven pacing, over-the-top caricatures, and Perry’s habit of “overexplaining” his messages through dialogue. Many of the dialogues were too long, and they get boring, overflogging points and some times unecesary repititions.

Verdict: If you enjoy Perry’s raw, unfiltered humour and don’t mind heavy profanity, this is one of his most “unhinged” and entertaining projects in years. However, those looking for a family-friendly Madea movie should definitely stay away.

For the big budget used to produce this movie, the plot was too thin. Emphasis on what happened in the cultural heritage site should have been emphasised more than overly portraying profanity, adult themes and off-colour humour.
