Support: Battle Snake It would be hard to think of a more eye-opening opening band than these fun-loving Aussies, bedecked as they were in bed sheet faux religious robes and the reckless abandon and silliness (think Tenacious D meets Monty Python) apparent throughout. It’s the sort of fun which welcomely exists in certain corners of the metal world but that once led to a reactionary punk explosion. With the singer performing HIIT jump squats and the keyboardist carrying a soloing guitarist on his shoulders through the crowd (Credit: Joel Keefe @ Airbourne) they demonstrated their physical aptitude, as well as displaying more than some in the audience might have bargained for. Thankfully there was also plenty of good musicianship, particularly the guitars, drums and bass, when their instruments were being played. They could not have said their own name more, so once more for those at the back, it’s Battle Snake.

Headliner: Eagles Of Death Metal The well-turned-out guys and girls in Eagles of Death Metal take the positivity and turn up the party spirit to ten, with healthy splashes of groovy licks and a celebratory atmosphere. It’s clear it’s as much fun for them and their crew as it is for the packed in public, smiling dancing throughout. Jesse might be a quick talking lover boy but it’s the girls in the band who run the show: Jennie Vee has infinite more sass and although Leah Bluestein takes her queues from him, she leaves a far firmer impression, peaking in their nice little Motörhead (Ace of Spades, natch) cover. In terms of the music, EODM can write a song and lead guitarist Scott Shiflett has some true skills, neatly demonstrated by winning the impromptu balcony vs. stage guitar battle. Funky!
