What Is It About Minnesota?

Minnesota, the 32nd state of 10,000 plus lakes has been trending for a while now as seemingly this hot bed state of calamity and a spirit of racial unrest. It is fascinating to me because by American standards , Minnesota is just not that remarkable of a state. There exists in the United States, a perception of states. For instance, New York is the financial powerhouse, home of New York City, need I say more. California is the good vibes, home of Hollywood, sunny skies , palm Trees and the Golden Gate Bridge. We have the sultry, western culture of Texas , wide open lands , ranching and Cowboys. Florida is the swamp and beach state , home of Disney and Florida Man. Even smaller states like Rhode Island and Connecticut draw up a national persona of quaint New England towns, lobsters and wealth. Minnesota is like the cold state in the northern Mid West region that is just there. It doesn’t have the name or fame of Illinois which benefits from Chicago. Nor does it have that famed automobile industry and Motown lure of nearby Michigan through Detroit .

Minnesota is over 75% white, largely descended from Germans and Scandinavians who arrived in the 19th century to farm. The rest of its population is split between Black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American in roughly near equal numbers. A large percentage of the black population is actually of Somali origin, a recently arrived group with roots beginning in the 80s and 90s. The state is also home to one of the largest Hmong people, infamously known as the “boat people” after the political upheaval in their native Laos forced them to flee by boat. Minnesota has one of the largest self identified LGBTQ communities as well.

Minnesota is a heavily Democrat state , with the power of its liberal center in the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, overshadowing a rural white population that leans conservative.

Those same twin cities were where Philando Castile was executed by a police officer in 2016 and George Floyd took his last breath in 2020 at the knees of a cop and set off a revolution amidst the Covid pandemic.

Minnesota has a lot going on. In many respects, it makes sense that it has such an immense impact in this very time of the Trump administration. A once largely agricultural white state, with liberal and conservative leanings that became home to generational communities of refugees and economic opportunists. A state that elected one of the first Muslim Somali congresswoman who is not the closest of friends with the executive branch.

All of these facets give me at least an understanding of why a once largely ignored state like Wyoming or Idaho is trending almost daily in 2026.
