Finding Peace Through Understanding The Human Condition

My Review of Jeremy Griffith’s book ‘FREEDOM’

FREEDOM: The End Of The Human Condition, by Jeremy Griffith.

FREEDOM: The End Of The Human Condition, by Jeremy Griffith.

There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after.

For me, discovering Jeremy Griffith's work was one of those moments.

As a scientist, I’ve always been driven by a desire to understand the world as deeply and honestly as possible. But there was one question that science never seemed to answer to my satisfaction:

Why are human beings the way we are?

Not just biologically, but psychologically and spiritually.

Why do we experience anxiety, insecurity, anger and conflict? Why do we struggle against ourselves? Why, despite all our intelligence and technological progress, do we continue repeating the same mistakes individually and collectively?

These questions stayed with me for years.

Then I discovered Jeremy Griffith’s book FREEDOM: The End of the Human Condition.

I can honestly say it changed my life. In many ways, I would even say it saved my life.

Not because it offered comforting words or positive thinking, but because it did something no other book had ever done for me: it explained, at the deepest level I’ve ever encountered, who I am.

It explained why I possess strengths and shortcomings. Why I have struggled. Why I have felt divided within myself. Most importantly, it explained why none of these things mean that I am fundamentally flawed.

For perhaps the first time in my life, I understood—not merely intellectually, but emotionally—that I am fundamentally good.

That realization brought with it an extraordinary sense of peace. But what affected me even more profoundly was realising that this understanding wasn’t just about me.

If Jeremy Griffith's explanation is correct, then it applies equally to every human being who has ever lived.

Every person struggling with guilt.

Every person wrestling with insecurity.

Every person who has hurt others or been hurt themselves.

Beneath all of that lies a fundamentally worthwhile human being who has simply been doing the best they could under circumstances they never fully understood.

That insight transformed how I see everyone.

Instead of seeing "good people" and "bad people," I began seeing fellow human beings carrying the same unresolved psychological burden that our species has lived with for thousands of generations.

The result has been a profound increase in compassion for both myself and others. Crucially, this isn’t the result of adopting a belief system or trying to be compassionate—it arises naturally from genuine understanding.

When you genuinely understand why people behave as they do, resentment begins to dissolve. Understanding makes genuine forgiveness and reconciliation possible, and not only with others, but also with ourselves.

This, to me, is why Jeremy Griffith’s work is so significant. Its implications extend far beyond personal wellbeing.

If humanity can truly understand itself, know the reason why we have been the way we have been, then many of the conflicts that divide us today lose their foundation.

Our need to constantly prove our worth begins to fade. Insecurities begin to heal. And the anger, fear and division that have shaped human history no longer define our present or our future.

Instead, we can begin relating to one another from an entirely different place: one built upon the understanding that every human being is fundamentally good and has been doing the best they could with the knowledge available to them.

I know these are extraordinary claims, and I don’t expect anyone to accept them simply because I’ve written them. I certainly didn’t arrive at them overnight.

Like many people, I initially found some of Jeremy Griffith’s ideas difficult to absorb. But the more I studied them, questioned them and reflected on my own experience, the more they explained and made sense of me and human behaviour generally.

Today I look back on discovering FREEDOM as the most important event of my life.

It gave me something I had been searching for without even fully realising it: an understanding of my own 'shadow' and the collective 'shadow' of humanity—our once-perplexing, but now profoundly understandable, capacity for both good and evil. And with that understanding came, gradually, greater self-acceptance, inner peace, a renewed sense of purpose, and, above all, a profound hope for humanity’s future.
