The Fantasy of Kurdistan’s Digital ID

A Strategic and Analytical Critique of the “Naskurd” Digital Project

A Symbol of Conflict: The fantasy of infrastructure-less digital IDs burns against the realities of Nation Branding.

An emotional, infrastructure-less endeavor that, instead of serving national branding, severely jeopardizes the digital trust of the Kurds.

Over the past half-century, the Kurdish struggle to prove and consolidate its national identity on the global stage has traversed various phases — ranging from armed and political struggles to cultural diplomacy and efforts to introduce the Kurdish language, flag, and culture to the international community. In today’s era, dominated by the digital sphere and social media, the new generation and the Kurdish diaspora are more eager than ever for a digital umbrella to unify this fragmented identity. In this context, the emergence of projects like the website naskurd.com, which claims to create a “Kurdish digital identity,” appears at first glance to be an appealing and emotionally resonant step. However, when evaluated through the strategic lenses of media, Nation Branding, and cybersecurity, we are confronted with a series of severe risks and serious questions. Rather than serving its purported goal, it wastes national energy and sows distrust.

This project, which presents itself as a “cultural and symbolic initiative” and emphasizes that it holds no legal or official standing, is fundamentally built on fantasy rather than facts and the genuine needs of the Kurdish individual. Although the website claims that data is not stored on servers and remains only within the user’s browser, requesting email addresses for account creation and harvesting personal information by an anonymous, unidentified group is a massive security risk. In today’s world, where “data” is the most valuable asset, collecting the information of hundreds of thousands of Kurds without the presence of an official institution, transparency, or a secure server exposes the Kurdish individual to cyber threats from adversaries, as well as commercial and intelligence exploitation. The sheer lack of transparency regarding who is behind this platform and the ultimate purpose of this data transforms the project from a national endeavor into an electronic trap.

From the standpoint of media principles and Nation Branding, the conduct of this campaign is highly irresponsible and amateurish. Generating fake ID cards using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for prominent Kurdish figures — ranging from “Shahid Qazi Muhammad” and artist “Ahmet Kaya” to contemporary artists and athletes — without prior permission is a blatant violation of intellectual property rights and media ethics.

This method of generating “hype” and launching deceitful campaigns is indicative of the inexperience and ignorance of a few youths behind computer screens who seek to play with national sentiments. Tellingly, the QR Code generated on these cards does not direct the user to a smart platform or an exclusive, meaningful Kurdish social network offering real services and connections. Instead, it merely redirects to the Wikipedia page for Kurdistan! This alone proves that there is no underlying philosophy, vision, or technological infrastructure behind this project.

Building a national identity or a global digital platform for the Kurds is not a task for an anonymous group on Twitter. Looking at global precedents, any step of this magnitude requires the backing of official institutions, credible academic centers, and legal authority. For example, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), as the only recognized legal Kurdish entity in the world, could adopt such a project in coordination with international tech hubs. Just as we saw during the Kurdistan independence referendum led by Masoud Barzani — where national issues required institutional decisions and definitive leadership — digital projects likewise demand authoritative backing. Baseless, individualistic efforts like the “United States of Kurdistan” thesis or this “Naskurd” project, instead of acting as a unifying force, merely generate digital chaos and squander the moral capital possessed by the Kurds.

In conclusion, while the desire of the Kurdish individual for a unified digital identity is deeply respected and a natural right, this pure sentiment must not become a casualty of baseless projects and emotional commodification. If we wish to build a robust national brand and a genuine digital platform that serves as a bridge between the parts of Kurdistan and its diaspora, we require transparency, a strong IT infrastructure, uncompromising data protection, and the active participation of academic and technological elites. Conversely, imaginary and counterfeit projects like Naskurd will not only fail to yield any positive impact, but they will also ensure that when a genuine, national project does eventually emerge, the Kurdish community will view it through a lens of skepticism and profound distrust.
