The Art of Unlearning: How My Amal Journey Redefined My View of “Success”

By Atika

When I first applied for the Amal Fellowship, my expectations were modest. I anticipated a series of career-oriented workshops focused on resume writing and interview skills. I assumed I would leave with a polished CV and a few new connections. What I didn’t anticipate was a profound internal shift, a rewiring of my thought processes that would challenge the very core of how I define success and measure my own worth.

The Pivotal Moment: The “Life Map” Activity

Of all the enriching sessions and interactions, the single instance that had the most profound impact on me was the “Life Map” activity during our first session. We were asked to visually map our life’s journey on a large sheet of paper, the goals basically. As I started sketching my own timeline, I realized I was meticulously documenting my educational and professional wins, glossing over the setbacks with quick, dismissive marks. My focus was entirely on the peaks.

However, the atmosphere in the session shifted as my batchmates began presenting their goals. They shared their financial targets and personal milestones with such confidence and honesty that it left me genuinely moved. I could see how much thought and self-reflection had gone into defining these goals. For the first time, I realized that I had been living without a clear direction, simply going with the flow. Their presentations acted as a mirror, reflecting back my own lack of clarity. This realization was both uncomfortable and liberating. It inspired me to take my own goals seriously and start defining what truly mattered to me.

A Paradigm Shift in Perspective

This realization caused me to look inward and challenge the way I had been seeing things. I had built my entire sense of self-worth on a linear, “success-only” narrative. I saw my past as a series of boxes to be ticked good grades, a good job and my future as a path to continue this trend. This activity shattered that rigid framework. I began to see my struggles not as inconvenient detours from my planned path, but as integral parts of the journey itself.

I realized that my constant fear of failure was paralyzing me. I was so focused on avoiding the valleys that I was missing the opportunity to learn and grow from them. This incident made me question: Why was I so afraid of acknowledging the very human experiences that made me who I am? It forced me to adopt a more holistic view of my life, one that celebrated resilience and learning just as much, if not more, than the final achievement. The narrative of my life was no longer a straight line pointing upward, but a rich and complex landscape of highs and lows, each contributing to the view from where I stand today.

The Energy of the Fellowship

This wasn’t something I realized on my own; it was a direct result of the energy and vulnerability exhibited by the people around me. If my fellow Amal participants had chosen to present only their successes, the exercise would have been nothing more than a competition. Instead, they chose authenticity. Their courage to share their personal failures, their fears, and their insecurities created a safe space where I felt comfortable enough to lower my own guard.

Watching them speak with such honesty and passion about their “failures” was transformative. Their energy was not one of shame but of empowerment. They weren’t defined by their setbacks; they were defined by how they had used those experiences to move forward. This collective act of trust and openness reshaped my perception of my peers from mere competitors in the job market to allies on a shared journey of growth. Their energy became a mirror that reflected a more compassionate and authentic way of perceiving my own story.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Looking back, I realize I would do things drastically differently. Instead of walking into that session with a rehearsed, highlight-reel version of my life, I would have approached it with more honesty and vulnerability from the start. I would have been less guarded and more open to the idea that sharing my struggles wasn’t a sign of weakness, but a testament to my strength. I would have allowed myself to be more present and less concerned with how my “map” compared to others.

The most important change, however, is how I will approach my future. I will no longer shy away from acknowledging my failures. I will actively reframe them as learning opportunities and stepping stones. The Amal Fellowship taught me a crucial lesson: the greatest successes are often built on the foundation of our most difficult experiences. This journey has shifted my focus from simply chasing the next achievement to building a meaningful life where growth, resilience, and authenticity are my guiding principles. I am not just building a career anymore. I am building a life with a story worth telling i guess now. Thanks to Amal ❤
