How I Photographed the Mineral Moon Using a Simple Newtonian Telescope

Introduction

The Mineral Moon is one of the most fascinating images you can capture in astrophotography. It does not require professional equipment: with the right technique and careful post‑processing, anyone can reveal the mineral variations on the lunar surface. In this article, I explain exactly how I photographed it using an amateur but effective setup.

1. My Equipment

For this project, I used:

  • Skywatcher EQ3.2 SynScan GoTo equatorial mount
  • 150/750 mm Newtonian telescope
  • Nikon D700 DSLR attached at prime focus
  • Sequator for stacking
  • Lightroom for the final color extraction

This is a setup accessible to many enthusiasts. No dedicated astro‑camera, no special filters. Just technique and patience.

2. The Shooting Session

I pointed the telescope at the Moon using the GoTo system and let the tracking keep it centered in the field of view. Then I captured many images — dozens — to have enough material for stacking and noise reduction.

Typical settings:

  • ISO 100–200
  • Shutter speed between 1/125 and 1/250
  • Manual focus using live view magnification
  • RAW format

The goal is to obtain sharp, well‑exposed frames without vibrations.

3. Stacking with Sequator

After importing the files, I used Sequator to align and stack them. This step is essential because it:

  • reduces noise
  • increases detail
  • produces a clean base file for color extraction

I exported the result as a 16‑bit TIFF to preserve maximum quality.

4. Processing in Lightroom

This is where the Mineral Moon comes to life.

My goal was to extract the real mineral colors while keeping the image natural and faithful to the lunar composition.

In Lightroom, I:

  • increased Vibrance and Saturation in a controlled way
  • used the Color Mixer to enhance blues and oranges
  • adjusted Texture and Clarity to bring out fine details
  • refined contrast using Curves

The final result shows the mineral variations of the lunar surface without exaggeration.
