Imphal — A Beautiful City

A look at some pictures

On the outskirts of the city, in the peripheral areas, there is gunfire, and people are dying. The State is in turmoil right now. It started in May 2023, and there has not been peace for almost a year.

In the city, we live quietly, unaffected by the violence. Protests had been made in this city against the atrocities in the peripheral villages, where farmers could not even go to their fields to carry out their duties. As is usual with most civilian protests, there will be some skirmishes, but the protests always die out, as is usual with most protests. The suffering of people in relief camps continues with no end in sight. I heard that there may be a shutdown protest tomorrow, but it has not been confirmed yet.

Amidst the pain and the suffering, I took up this tiny little story of showcasing the beauty of Imphal in pictures.

I looked through some pictures that I had taken of Imphal City. The pure blue sky over Imphal City is untainted with pollution. It is beautiful.

I was driving my daughter to her evening tuition. The sunset was spectacular. It may be wrong to point my phone camera at the sunset; the pictures are not captured properly, and my camera lens may be affected. Still, I could not resist taking the picture above. The camera could not capture the surreal nature of the image.

The picture above was taken off the street in the morning today while driving to my workplace. I stopped to take the picture. Look at the sheer beauty of the blue sky. Of course, there are many cities with blue skies in the world, but I remembered my stay in Delhi, where the smog and the pollution were such that the blue sky was not seen. In comparison, this looked too good.

This was a view from the top of the overbridge that ran through the bazaar as we drove home from Kangla on Sunday. The Aryan Theatre complex used to be a small traditional theatre, and Papa used to take part in theatre plays there; he acted and also directed some plays. Now, it has been transformed into a modern complex, but it has seen a lot of controversies and war between factions. Recently, my father was given the honour of lifetime President of the Aryan Theatre.

This is a view from the western gate of Kangla. If we cross the road, we enter the Imphal Bazaar or Khwairamband Keithel. As we enter, we will see the Ima Markets or women’s markets of Manipur, where the traditional marketplaces have been transformed into modern structures.

This is the last picture that I will be sharing today. This is a view from the overbridge of the market complexes built in place of the traditional Ima market. You will see women vendors of all ages in these markets, plying their wares of fish, vegetables, and clothes.

The women’s market in Imphal is quite well known.

The Ima Market (Meitei: Ima Keithel; literally, Mothers’ Market), also known as the Nupi Keithel (English: Women’s Market) or the Khwairamband Keithel, is a women-only market in the middle of Imphal in the Indian state of Manipur. It is the only market in the world run entirely by women.Inside the market, male shopkeepers and vendors are not allowed to sell anything.

Thank you so much for reading my story!
