The Story Behind MySQL — More Human Than You Think ❤️

Like many developers, I always assumed **MySQL** was just another technical name.
Turns out, I was completely wrong.
The “My” in MySQL isn’t short for “My Database” — it’s named after co-founder Michael “Monty” Widenius’ daughter, My. And the story doesn’t end there. His son inspired MaxDB, while MariaDB, one of the most popular open-source databases today, was named after his younger daughter, Maria.
When Oracle acquired MySQL through its purchase of Sun Microsystems, concerns grew within the open-source community. To preserve the spirit of open-source development, Monty launched MariaDB — a **community-driven fork** that continues to power millions of applications today.
As developers, we often talk about **SQL queries, [ACID transactions](https://www.databricks.com/blog/what-are-acid-transactions), [indexes](https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/dbms/indexing-in-databases-set-1/), and [database optimization](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/database-optimization)**. But stories like this remind us that behind every technology we use, there’s a person, a vision, and sometimes… a family.
*The next time you write `SELECT FROM users;`, remember—you're not just querying a database. You're using a piece of open-source history built with both engineering and heart.** ❤️
