The Devil Is Debt

A Reflection on Sin, Thought, and the Breath That Saves Us

What Is Sin, Really?

“The devil is sin.” It’s a bold claim, but not as mysterious as it sounds.

Sin is not always some grand, dramatic fall from grace. Often, it is quiet. Subtle. It shows up as temptation — the small voice that nudges you toward what you already know is not right for you. It is spending money you do not have, chasing approval you do not need, or entertaining thoughts that slowly turn you against yourself or others.

It is not just in actions, but in patterns of thinking. Thoughts that erode your sense of worth. Judgments about strangers you’ve never met. Stories you tell yourself that keep you small.

Sin, at its core, is anything that misses the mark — anything that pulls you away from truth, from alignment, from the life you know, deep down, you are meant to live.

The Quiet Slips That Cost Us Everything

Sin rarely announces itself loudly. More often, it arrives disguised as harmless indulgence.

It looks like staying out too late, one drink too many, one decision too careless. You forget to set the alarm. You miss the meeting. The opportunity slips through your fingers. Then come the excuses, the blame, the quiet resentment toward life, toward others, even toward God.

But if you trace it back, the unraveling began much earlier — with a choice you knew wasn’t right.

Sin is not just the act. It is the disconnection from awareness. The moment you stop being honest with yourself.

Debt: The Devil in Disguise

Among all the forms sin can take, one of the most misunderstood is debt.

Debt is more than money owed. It is a state of being.

Consider this: ‘devil’ spelled backward is ‘lived’. And how often do we find ourselves living backward — out of alignment with our values, our truth, our promises?

Debt accumulates not just in bank accounts, but in choices. In broken commitments. In moments where we trade long-term integrity for short-term pleasure.

An affair, for example, may feel exciting in the moment — but does it honor your word? Your values? Your truth?

Debt is what happens when we repeatedly choose against ourselves.

— -

The Weight of Owing

Debt has a way of tightening its grip — not just financially, but emotionally and physically.

It breeds stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. It keeps you working endlessly, chasing relief that never quite arrives. It strains relationships, fractures trust, and can even manifest as illness in the body.

It is not just the numbers that weigh on you — it is the constant mental noise. The looping thoughts. The quiet panic.

Debt pulls you into a spiral, where each step forward feels like two steps back.

So the question becomes: how do you break free?

— -

A Shift in Perspective: Debt as Thought

What if debt is not just external — but internal?

What if the “devil” is not an entity, but a pattern of thinking?

Because debt thrives on lack. On fixation. On the constant awareness of what is missing.

It pulls your attention away from what is present — love, beauty, breath — and anchors you in scarcity.

The more you focus on what you do not have, the more powerful it becomes.

In this way, debt is not sustained by money alone. It is sustained by thought.

— -

The Practice of Returning

It is easy to speak of gratitude when life feels light. Much harder when bills pile up, when notices arrive, when pressure closes in.

But this is where the shift begins — not in thinking differently, but in feeling differently.

Try this: hold your breath.

Just for a moment.

Notice how quickly everything else fades. The worries. The stress. The noise. All of it disappears, replaced by a single, overwhelming need — to breathe.

In THAT moment, nothing else matters.

Not debt. Not fear. Not the future.

Only air.

— -

Breath as Liberation

THIS is the doorway.

When your thoughts begin to overwhelm you, return to the simplest truth: you are breathing.

And THAT is no small thing.

Be grateful for THAT breath. Then the next. And the next.

Let gratitude follow each inhale, each exhale. Slowly, your body begins to soften. Your mind quiets. The storm loses its intensity.

You begin to remember what is still here.

Your senses. Your awareness. The people who care for you. The unexpected help that may arrive. The quiet support woven into existence itself.

From THIS place, clarity returns.

And with clarity comes better choices.

— -

Living Forward Again

Freedom from debt — true freedom — is not just about paying off what is owed. It is about reclaiming alignment.

It is about living forward again.

Making choices that honor your truth. Speaking honestly. Acting with awareness. Choosing what strengthens rather than weakens you.

And when you falter — as all people do — you return. Not with judgment, but with breath. With presence. With gratitude.

Because the opposite of sin is not perfection.

It is awareness.

— -

The Source of the First Breath

Where does THAT breath come from?

The one that steadies you. The one that brings you back.

Call it God. Call it life. Call it the unseen force that sustains everything.

It does not demand perfection. It offers presence.

And It is always available to you — waiting, quietly, in the space between one breath and the next.

Return to IT.

Again and again.

And in doing so, you loosen the grip of the devil — not by fighting it, but by no longer feeding it.

You live differently.

You live forward.

You live free… Debt free.
