People are unfortunately not selfless. At least not in the way and in the moment you’d think. Most people wouldn’t immediately think of a way to solve your issue when they are presented with it, not when they likely have their own issues to sort too. It’s just human nature. It’s what we have classified as right or wrong, selfish it selfless. Its subjective instead.
King Solomon in the scriptures could have kept Uriah alive if he was as selfless. He should have probably thought of Uriah’s contribution to the war and everything Uriah was doing for the kingdom but The King was more inclined to think about himself. To think about keeping the beauty Bathsheba by his side tan he was inclined to savibg or not killing Uriah.
And so many of us are like that too. So many of the people we meet are like that too. Most person’s are just not inclined to do things that do not benefit them in anyway. It is psychological.
It’s easier to say yes when you’re not bargaining a losing deal. it’s easier to say yes when you’re seeing even the littlest benefits for you too.
If it wasn’t so getting mentors, coaches etc would be easy. Nobody would teach you to give before you ask.
This is why collaboration exists. People would collaborate not because they are good people helping others but because there is something out of it. It’s either you’re helping them promote themselves too or you’re doing something that is of interest to them. Collaboration meets at the intersection of both parties self-interest.
It’s why small creators want to collaborate with big creators rather than people at their level. Why Shark tank is an investors pitch but you don’t only pitch, the investors get a share. Why buying of stocks though a wealth builder doesn’t stop the stocks from falling and rising at it’s convenience.
Maybe I shouldn’t call it selfishness. It’s just human beings being humans.
We do not like to lose. We do not like to be at the losing end. You either win or you get something out of it.
If you want the best deals, offer something to please their interest more than you talk about gratitude. It’s a go-to to first remind someone of all the things you’ve done for them before, of how you’ve been this and that to them but gratitude bears a sense of guilt. And people don’t like to feel guilty. They don’t like to feel like they have something to pay for.
Appeal to their interest. Show them something you can do for them instead. Share with them something they want particularly and watch the magic happen.
I’ve gotten faster results from “I’d help you xoxo while you teach me…” than asking for a coaching session outrightly.
