Tobacco Harm Reduction And The Future
Tobacco harm reduction (THR) focuses on strategies that are designed to reduce health risks which are associated with tobacco smoking, this includes the constant use of nicotine. The health concerns associated with smoking tobacco are no secret and if the current trends continue, it is expected that there will be a billion lives lost due to tobacco smoking around the world this century.
Tobacco harm reduction is not widely implemented or accepted. Many countries have placed heavy sanctions on the reduced nicotine-containing products, such as e-cigarettes.
These products remain heavily contested, even though the toxins and chemicals in tobacco smoke, especially tar, can result in premature death or chronic disease.
Anyone who has been a smoker and tried to quit knows what a difficult process it is with the highest rate of relapse. Stopping smoking for six to twelve months without intervention is only three percent, but when stopping with nicotine replacement therapy, that percentage increases to fifteen percent. Nicotine replacement therapy doesn’t assist with all the symptoms associated with quitting smoking. E-cigarettes can cover the behavioural aspects associated with smoking while providing some nicotine. They are now the most preferred smoking cessation product, though it is considered an alternative to smoking and not a nicotine replacement therapy.
There is evidence to show that smoking cessation is effective, yet smokers continue to smoke along with e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are not a satisfying alternative for some smokers. Smoking also remains high in the marginalised and vulnerable groups with eighty percent of those using illicit substances with nicotine replacement therapies and electronic cigarettes not being studies enough in these particular groups.
Even though there are plenty of services and products available to help with the quitting of smoking, there is more awareness and products needed including nicotine replacement therapy and electronic cigarettes, along with providing a better understanding of how the products can complement each other, making it easier to quit for the long run.
Studies have revealed that e-cigarette use is mostly used by ex and current smokers with many using both electronic cigarettes and tobacco smoking. By exploring the quitting trajectories through effective research is more of a proven approach to helping understand why some individuals will succeed with certain smoking cessation products and others won’t
There is still a lot of misinformation with many of the public believing that there are emerged risks associated with smoking cessation and electronic cigarette products. Some believe that e-cigarettes are more harmful to them than smoking tobacco for years. Research is being conducted on harm reduction strategies and the benefits of nicotine replacement therapies, including electronic cigarettes and their long-term use.
More behavioural studies need to be carried out to fully understand what the conditions are that makes smoker change to the electronic cigarette or any other reduced-risk product. This is a priority area for research, as there are still many countries with high smoking prevalence rates with limited or no access to any harm reduction approved products.
The future of tobacco harm reduction is still very unclear and will be determined based on the tolerance of nicotine, reporting, and effective research that offers proven results. Evidence is constantly being introduced regarding the reduced harm of electronic cigarettes and other combustible nicotine-containing products. Tobacco harm reduction is not risk-free, but it is likely to help improve public health benefits.
