Trial Begins in 1989 Murder of Michigan Mother After Decades-Long Cold Case Breakthrough

The trial of Steven Gary Koon began in Grand Traverse County on Monday, June 1, 2026, in connection with the 1989 murder of Linda Marie Meteer.

Koon, who faces an open murder charge, pleaded not guilty last spring.

A Long-Time Suspect

According to investigators, Koon had been considered a suspect since 1989. However, authorities were unable to make an arrest due to a lack of evidence.

That changed in 2025.

Just months after the case was reopened in 2024, advancements in forensic technology led investigators to finally charge him. DNA evidence, including hair found in Koon’s vehicle, is credited with helping break the case open.

The Murder of Linda Marie Meteer

Linda Marie Meteer, a 41-year-old mother of five, was found dead in Hoosier Valley on April 27, 1989.

According to investigators, she had met Koon during what has been described as a “casual encounter.”

For 37 years, her murder remained unsolved.

For decades, Linda Marie Meteer’s family lived without answers while the case sat cold.
