Their Presence Is A Vow

They are the lanterns in the dark, the keepers of the covenant, sturdy hands steadying the ladder, holding space for others to climb through their fears.

They are the quiet architects building invisible bridges between despair and endurance.

The guides who carry maps written in instinct and memory, leading souls through storms they themselves survived.

They absorb our panic in the ancient promise kept in the daily act of carrying others through.

Their presence is a vow to stand on the threshold to soften and steady the sharp edges of this era.

I wrote this poem in response to the June Paper Poetry prompt: covenant, thanks to Carolyn Hastings for the invitation.

Definition of Covenant: A covenant is a solemn, binding agreement or promise between two or more parties. While a contract focuses on transactions and obligations, a covenant goes much deeper. It is highly personal, relational, and establishes an unbreakable bond of loyalty. — (Merriam-Webster)
