The Lau Family Lineage — From the Tin Fields of Larut to Penang and Ipoh

Sometimes history begins with a simple question.

In my case, it began with my wife’s family.

What started as a search for information about Low Sam (Lew Ah Sam), a Chinese mining figure associated with the Larut tin fields, gradually became a journey through family memories, forgotten graves, colonial records, court documents, newspaper archives and surviving buildings stretching from Larut to Penang and Ipoh.

Along the way, I discovered that the story was larger than a family tree.

It was a story of migration, enterprise, hardship, survival and continuity across more than a century of Malayan history.

The research led me to old mining records, the historic streets of George Town, family burial grounds in Penang, colonial correspondence preserved at The National Archives in Kew, UK and physical traces that still survive today — a former family residence on Chulia Street, Penang, a commemorative fountain in Ipoh and a road bearing the name Low Foo.

The study also uncovered previously overlooked Colonial Office records relating to Lew Ah Sam during the Larut disturbances of 1872, extending his documented historical presence beyond the period usually emphasised in existing accounts.

As the research progressed, it opened a window into the world of the Larut tin mines, the Chinese mining communities of nineteenth-century Perak and the turbulent events that would later become known as the Larut Wars.

Questions raised during this family lineage study eventually led to further archival investigations into the Larut conflicts and later the Penang Riots of 1867. In that sense, this family history became the starting point of a much broader historical research journey.

Most importantly, it preserved memories passed down through generations before they were lost.

The result is The Lau Family Lineage — From the Tin Fields of Larut to Penang and Ipoh.

This historical study combines family memories, field investigation and archival research to trace one documented branch of the Lau family from the tin fields of Larut to Penang, Ipoh and the present day.
