“What happened to Darren?” Kim asked Leah while stirring sugar into her coffee.
“He’s gone.”
“You say that like he’s been put down.”
“When did you start taking sugar, Kim?” Leah tried to change the subject.
“Well, I need some vice in my boring life. Come on, dish the goss! Why is Darren gone?”
“He kept calling me a… a dirty orifice.”
Kim put her cup down. “What? But you shower every day.” She grinned. “Seriously, really? That’s horrid!”
Leah shrugged. “Well… not that phrase exactly. More derogatory. I can’t say. It’s disgusting, like him. And he implied I couldn’t get enough of him.”
Kim winced. “Charming.”
“At first I thought it was funny. A pet name. But then I realised he only spoke to me sweetly when he wanted sex.”
“Making out you’re a slut but being nice to you when he was after your… hole. Now that’s contradictory.”
“Yeah right, and anything else annoyed him. Me asking questions or having opinions. But the second he got horny, suddenly I was the centre of the universe.”
Kim snorted. “A very specific region of the universe.”
Leah laughed despite herself. “Exactly. He’d reduced me to just a small body part.”
“And men wonder why some women suddenly become lesbians.”
“He’d text me gross things too. Like that was all I was worth.”
Kim leaned back. “So what finally did it?”
Leah grimaced “Last night I was talking about my promotion, when he stroked my thigh and called me his favourite little — NO I won’t say it!”
“Don’t. No more.”
“Yeah.”
“What did you do?”
“I left.”
Kim slowly nodded.
Leah sighed. “I think I only stayed before because I needed to feel wanted.”
Kim pointed at her with the teaspoon. “There’s a difference between being wanted and being mistaken for an appliance!”
