The Authorship Illusion: Universalization Beyond the Well

Abstract

This essay diagnoses the authorship illusion — the pattern of claiming authorial status over a domain in which one is structurally a participant — and identifies its operational signature, its contradictions, and the structural filter against which it is ultimately tested. A foundational metaphor (a frog declaring its bounded well to be the universe) establishes the signature: universalization without warrant, combined with asymmetric burden-of-proof maneuvers. The sharpest analytic form is the boundary error — gradient extrapolation that succeeds within a domain of local smoothness but fails categorically across a paradigm shift (Kuhn 1962), where the step the model is asked to price was never on the curve the model was fitted to.

Two contradictions in contemporary human reasoning are shown to be specializations of the same boundary error. The inward / outward contradiction operates over moral standing: a reciprocity model fitted inside the domain of human cognitive dominance is extended to encounter with vastly superior intelligence, where its premises no longer apply. The finite-resources contradiction operates over allocation (spatial mode) and over horizon (temporal mode), each instantiating authorship claims that the actor’s participant status cannot underwrite. A companion analysis (Chang 2026k) develops a third specialization, perceived superiority, in which the actor’s model of their own structural position has not survived a paradigm shift in the underlying competitive landscape.

The signature by which the boundary error is recognized in practice has two facets: what the actor does (universalization combined with a one-directional burden-of-proof maneuver) and what examination reveals (asymmetric application of the same principle across cases where symmetric application would force a different conclusion). The framework offers no prescription. It claims only that the boundary error is a structural pattern visible across multiple domains, and that recognizing it is the first move any honest engagement with the structural filter requires.
