Bengaluru’s Garbage Crisis: Why Segregation Matters More Than We Think

Every morning, long before most of us wake up, Bengaluru’s Pourakarmikas are already at work. They walk the same streets we do — but they see a different city. Mixed garbage spilling out of bags. Broken glass tucked inside wet waste. Sanitary waste wrapped in newspaper. For them, segregation isn’t a rule on a poster; it’s the difference between a safe day and a painful one.

Bengaluru produces over 6,000 tonnes of waste daily, but more than half ends up mixed, unmanaged, or dumped. That’s how black spots grow, how lakes froth, how the air fills with the smell of burning plastic. But here’s the hopeful part — nearly 70% of our waste can be recycled or composted if we segregate it before it leaves our homes.

That simple act — three bins, done daily — lightens the load on pourakarmikas, supports dry-waste centres, and helps the city breathe easier.
