The History of Flickr

For this assignment, I chose the photo sharing website called Flickr. Flickr has a very dynamic history and evolution. Flickr was founded by a couple of programmers, Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. Originally developed as a photograph-sharing service in part of an online role-playing game called Game Neverending, Flickr became far more than the founders expected. It was originally developed as part of the game due to Butterfield and Fake’s consideration of the social nature of the game’s capabilities in regard to photo sharing.

As a photographer myself, I felt compelled to choose Flickr over the other companies listed. Flickr just passed their 20 year anniversary in 2024. This company was founded on February 10, 2004 (Flickr). It did not officially take off until August of that year and since then, has been evolving in the photography community since.

The core mission and vision of Flickr was the emphasize the platform’s dedication to artistry elevation and memories of various photographers. Flickr had a commitment to serve photography enthusiasts as a nuturing space. It expanded beyond just a website and into mobile applications for iPhone and Android. Through the years, they went through redesigns and was even purchased by Yahoo! in 2005. Unfortunately, Yahoo! started what appeared to be the downfall of Flickr. As mobile applications were on the rise, Flickr was far behind. The iPhone was released in 2007, and a mobile application for Flickr was not available for the public until late 2009. This gave Facebook and other photo sharing applications plenty of time to become the top choice for photo sharing. Ultimately, the delayed timing of the mobile application and relying on Yahoo!’s website for logging in created frustration amongst their followers.

In 2012 and 2013, Flickr started to make a comeback with improved applications, pleasing users. Also referred to as “Flickr 2.0”, Yahoo! launched the official applications for iPhone and Android that users had wanted for years. It also offered a new plan 1TB storage for Pro and free users at launch in 2013.

In 2017, Verizon purchased Yahoo! and then less than a year later, Flickr was sold to SmugMug. Since then, the new owner limited resources on Flickr and started deleting images of free users except for the newest 1,000 and Creative Commons images. Despite all the changes of the new owner, Flickr still holds its place among the top 500 sites globally and top 300 in the United States. Despite the competition, Flickr is holding its own position.

I consider Flickr to be the original photo sharing applications out there and I do feel it has significance in present times. Instagram is formatted for engagement and instant gratification, while I purely love to look at truly phenomenal photography without all the extra junk. I have always felt Flickr is like one big art gallery, showing all these beautiful photos that should practically be in National Geographic while Instagram is pushing for the influencer era and business side of photo sharing. Having a simple photo sharing platform for serious photographers has its significance with a community of like-minded individuals.
