I've been thinking a lot about the word crossover. The expression crossover was originally created by the music industry and referred to an artist who was popular in one genre and then went to another to attract a larger audience. There's also an expression in marketing called cross promotion, where an artist or a concept can be cross-promoted in multiple areas simultaneously.
There are many artists who have successfully crossed over and been popular to many musical styles and ages of fans. Kenny Rogers, Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Eagles, Billy Ray Cyrus and the infamous Dolly Parton were all successful at crossing over into new listener territory. But Dolly Parton had the one exclusive attraction to everyone. Just hearing her voice and the joy in her heart created love for Dolly.
I've been reading so many stories about Dolly over the last few days, from from friends who knew her so well personally, and those she touched with just a book. Dolly was genuine, beautiful, smart, and seem to have a heart of gold all over her sleeve. When you heard her sing for the first time she was instantly your best friend, sister or mother. She had a way of bringing you into her heart through her eyes and the emotion in her song. She crossed over the camera and brought you into her heart with every song, even the silly ones.
And as we say goodbye to Dolly today, music will never be the same. She spent a lifetime helping other women succeed in the cutthroat music business. She taught women how to support each other, through her music and through her life.
She sang of her humble beginnings and she sang of abuse and of being disrespected. She taught many women how to be strong both in love, and the business world. Because Dolly was a forced to be reckoned with.
I remember the first time I saw her, she performed on Hee Haw when I was a child. I saw her beauty and heard her angelic voice and instantly felt like I knew her. I wasn't into country music, but later when she crossed over, I loved her songs 9 to 5, Two Doors Down, Islands in the Stream and of course I will always love you.
The many people who have spoken about Dolly this week have said how much they will miss her and how her friendship was genuine. Her faith was pure. And she didn't take bullshit from anyone. She taught us how to give and be better human beings.
And now Dolly has crossed over, the world will miss the sincerity and generosity of Dolly, probably more than we can fathom.
