Ignorance of Who Jesus Is

“But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where He is from.” John 7:27 (NIV)

One of the greatest factors that negatively influences our estimation of Jesus is ignorance, that is, not knowing who He truly is. John 1:10–12 tells us, that , “He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognise Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” While the idiom may be a common saying, that, “ignorance is bliss”, know this for your own good today, that “ignorance of God’s nature is not bliss, it is folly”. For it is only fools who say in their hearts, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).

In John 7, the people were assessing Jesus based on what they thought they knew about Him. They believed they knew where He came from, the family He was born into, and even His profession. And so, they said in Matthew 13:55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?”. Because of this knowledge they had of Him, they concluded that He could not possibly be the Messiah. Their problem was not that they were not informed that Jesus is the Messiah; it was the lack of revelation and ignorance, believing they knew exactly how the son of man was going to appear to them and save them. They had heard about Jesus but they did not know Him. They saw His humanity but failed to recognise who He truly was. Their assumptions blinded them to God’s truth standing right before them.

The same danger exists today. Many people have heard about Jesus, attended church, grown up in Christian homes, and even read the Bible, yet they have never truly come to know Him. When our understanding of God is based on hearsay, family tradition, culture, or personal assumptions rather than revelation through His Word and the Holy Spirit, we can underestimate who Jesus really is.

Ignorance causes us to reduce Jesus to merely a teacher, a prophet, a miracle worker, or a historical figure as many do even today. But when God opens our eyes to come to the knowledge of who He is, we begin to see Him as Lord, our Saviour and the Son of God.

A wrong estimation of Jesus leads to weak faith, because, your understanding of who Jesus really is affects your faith and your expectations of Him.

The antidote to ignorance of God’s nature is a revelation through God’s Word. As believers, we must continually seek a relationship with Christ to know Him more. The more we truly know Him, the more accurately we value and follow Him because, it is in building a relationship with Him that you get to really know that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Ignorance of who someone truly is prevents you from honouring them as they deserve. Therefore, you cannot honour Jesus as He deserves if you don’t know who He truly is.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have underestimated you because of my ignorance of your true nature. Open my eyes to know you more and know you more accurately. Remove every form of spiritual blindness, false assumptions, and ignorance from my heart. Help me to see you as you truly are, in all your love for me. May my faith be strengthened as I discover more of who you are and may that knowledge transform how I trust, honour, and follow you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
