Katuku: Care and Protection of Senior Citizens to Be My Priority

The Incoming Machakos Senator has regretted that the older members of the society have not been taken care due to lack of appropriate laws.

Hon. Mutua Katuku promises to lobby for the fast track of the Care and Protection of Older Members of Society Bill, 2018 seeking to provide a framework through which county governments are to put in place mechanisms for the implementation of policies and programmes necessary for the realisation of the rights of older members of society under the Constitution.

The Bill has stalled in the Senate since 2018 leading to prolonged suffering of our senior citizens in our society.

In particular, the counties are expected to establish homes and implement programmes within the county for the care of older members of society.

Senior citizens will receive reasonable care, assistance and protection from their family and the state. Community-based and home-based care programmes will be put in place at both county and national levels to ensure this is achieved.

"Kenyans and particularly Machakos residents of goodwill should therefore drum up support for me to get to the Senate for me to legislate and lobby for this bill; It is a great step forward in the protection of older members of our society", said Katuku while addressing the media on the issue.
