One Memorable Speech

Our drabbles are now double drabbles, so 200 words exactly!

“This boy used to go to school with his dog. Sadly, they were separated. His dog graduated!”

James continued after the applause.

“At the end of last year, we learned that our smartphones would be locked away every school day, retrievable at the end of each day.

“I still remember the silent mouthing of ‘whatever’, whatever, because however we felt, we knew our parents would be having private parties to celebrate.

“I look back on that decision with gratitude, because I, like you, was wedded to the internet.

“Like a trusted friend, my phone sat on my desk, quietly tempting me to take those quick looks, which I did, only to find I’d lost track of whatever my teacher was trying to get across.

“I was lost.

“And then the staff came up with their survival strategy, the outright ban.

“Sure, I was annoyed, but it didn’t take long to discover my newfound class engagement, my love for reading restored, and the joy I’d once had for board games, waiting in the wings.

“I was calm, polite, attentive, and goal-oriented. We all were.

“If only we could have our teachers follow suit … we know … hard call, but!”
