I Applied My Math In Real Life !
Let’s go beyond the textbooks !
Sadly, math isn’t fun for most students because we are locked in classrooms, heads in our textbooks.
Nothing we learn, we actually get the chance to apply it in the real-world.
Hence, for this summer, I endeavor to apply my math skills in my environement.
Thales of Miletus measured the Great Pramid of Egypt
Eratosthenes measured the Earth’s Circomference
Imhotep designed the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser — the oldest monumental stone building in the world
And me,
I was going to measure a pole,
the pole’s height…

ennemy spotted !
How was I going to accomplish this?
Fortunately for me, I wasn’t alone to accomplish this feat.
I had the sun by my side !

Now I’m going to show you my dark side
Basically, I will measure the pole’s height,
with a stick…
Here’s a sketch of the situation

Those two triangles are similar triangles cuz the sun is hitting them at the same height and distance.

→Now shall we take some measurements?
Using my nasty-ass feet, I measured the objects shadows
[1 foot= 27cm]
the stick shadow = 50 cm
the stick height = 103 cm
the pole shadow = 405 cm (15 feet —a heel-to-toe walk)
→Now shall we plug in?

→Now shall we isolate?

≈ 8,3 meters — if you like.

MATH = GOD
Even though, the math and the process I used was quite easy.
Do not underestimate the experiment,
cuz I went beyond textbooks to apply my math in my environement — which is what schools fail to teach.
Moreover,
This experiment taught me that with just a little stick, something as high as a pole becomes small,
it becomes measurable !
