Factory Reset HP/3COM 5500-xx switch

To establish a connection with the 3COM switch I have used a USB to console port cable module and connect it to Windows system

When cable plugged to the PC it should shows in “Device Manager” like following (in my case the name is COM4):

Now download putty from putty.org and use the following configuration in serial connection:

Now click on open

I bought the switch pre-configured so I needed to reset to default configuration

While the console cable connected reboot the switch and press “Ctrl+b”

Press “7” to bypass the configuration for next boot then press Enter

Press “0” to reboot then Enter

After the booting enter “save” then “Y” and press Enter when asked for file name leave it empty and press Enter to rewrite the current configuration with factory configurations

Now write “reboot” then press Enter to reboot and verify that factory reset was done correctly

For reference the default credential for 3COM/HP switches:

user: admin password:<empty>

user: manager password:manager

user: monitor password:monitor
