Dadi’s Two Bottles of Mustard Oil

One winter afternoon, little Aarav was helping his grandmother in the kitchen. As Dadi prepared lunch, he noticed two bottles of mustard oil on the shelf.

“Dadi,” he asked curiously, “why do you keep two different mustard oils? Aren’t they the same?”

Dadi smiled and invited him to sit beside her.

“My child,” she said, “they may come from the same mustard family, but they each have their own personality. Let me tell you a story.”

Many years ago, in a village surrounded by beautiful yellow mustard fields, two brothers were born. The younger brother was Yellow Mustard Oil, while the elder brother was Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil.

Yellow Mustard Oil was calm, gentle, and friendly. Everyone liked him because he blended well with everything. Whether it was vegetables, dal, or everyday curries, he made food taste delicious without overpowering it.

Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil, on the other hand, was bold and strong. His aroma could fill an entire kitchen the moment the bottle was opened. He loved traditional recipes, especially fish curries, pickles, and festive dishes.

One day, the brothers argued about who was better.

Yellow Mustard Oil said, “People choose me because I have a mild flavor and make everyday cooking easy.”

Kachi Ghani replied, “But families choose me when they want authentic taste and traditional flavors.”

Unable to decide, they visited an old village cook for advice.

The cook listened carefully and then prepared two meals. For the first meal, she used Yellow Mustard Oil to cook vegetables and lentils. The food tasted light, balanced, and enjoyable for everyone.

For the second meal, she used Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil to prepare fish curry and mango pickle. The rich aroma and traditional taste impressed everyone at the table.

The cook smiled and said, “Neither of you is better. You simply have different strengths.”

Yellow Mustard Oil realized he was perfect for everyday family meals.

Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil understood that he was special for traditional recipes and strong flavors.

From that day onward, the brothers stopped competing and started working together.

Dadi looked at Aarav and pointed to the two bottles on her shelf.

“Now do you understand?” she asked.

Aarav nodded.

“So Yellow Mustard Oil is for everyday cooking, and Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil is for special traditional dishes?”

“Exactly!” Dadi replied proudly.

She added a little Yellow Mustard Oil to the vegetables and a spoonful of Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil to the pickle.

As the family gathered for lunch, delicious aromas filled the room.

Aarav took a bite and smiled.

“Dadi, now I know why you keep both bottles.”

Dadi laughed and said, “The secret of a good kitchen is knowing when to use each ingredient. Just like people, every oil has its own purpose.”

And from that day on, whenever Aarav saw the two bottles on the shelf, he remembered Dadi’s lesson: Yellow Mustard Oil and Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil are not competitors. Together, they make Indian cooking complete.
