Milk is a basic necessity in most households nationwide. It is valued not only for it’s nutritional content, but also for the important role it plays in our daily lives. From breakfast → lunch → dinner, milk has long been recognized as a source of essential nutrients that support growth, development, and overall wellbeing.

Hello there! it’s me again.. and it’s currently 12:52pm Tuesday. Happy New Month, I wish you a blessed and fulfilling month filled with abundance of God’s blessings.

Every year on June 1, the world celebrates World Milk Day, this event was established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2001. This day highlights the importance of milk as a nutritious food and to recognize the contributions of the dairy sector to our society, the economy, and sustainable development.

Milk has long been valued for it’s nutritional, economic, and cultural significance, making it an important part of societies around the world.

It’s safe to say that this year’s theme “Celebrating Women Farmers”, shines a spotlight on millions of women globally whose dedication, resilience, and hardwork helps in sustaining dairy farming.

Why Milk Matters

From generations to generations, milk remains one of the most widely consumed beverages across the world.

Milk is packed with essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin D and B12, which contribute to healthy bones, muscles, and overall body function. Milk intake is beneficial for both children and adults.

Across cultures and continents (Africa, Europe, Asia, America), milk is used in variety of foods, beverages, and desserts, making it an important ingredient in cuisines around the world.

The dairy industry also plays a significant role in supporting livelihoods, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to local, and national economies. Millions of farmers, processor, distributors, and retailers depend on dairy production as a source of income.

I’d gladly say that women are the heartbeat of every nation and most women are hard workers. Globally, women are actively involved in feeding and caring for dairy animals, milking, processing dairy products, managing farm operations, and supporting household incomes.

Did you know? India is the world’s largest milk producer, accounting for over 22% of global production, generating over 245 million metric tonnes of milk annually which is driven primarily by its vast scale of dairy farming and high domestic demand.

But despite their significant contributions, most women farmers often face challenges such as limited access to land ownership, financial resources, agricultural training, and modern farming technologies, this is common especially in poor or impoverished countries (or communities). Yet this doesn’t hinder them, they still continue to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and dedication in sustaining dairy production and ensuring food security for their families and communities.

Did you know? The most iconic milk slogan is “got milk?". A widely iconic 1993 marketing initiative created by Goodby Silverstein & partners for the California Milk Processor Board. The campaign became famous for it’s celebrity milk mustache ads and for promoting the necessity of having milk on hand.

The Current Top 5 Milk Producing Countries

According to the international dairy production statistics, these are the current top five (5) milk producing countries in the world:

  • India
  • United States
  • China
  • Pakistan
  • Brazil

This year’s celebration highlights the importance of creating opportunities that empower women in agriculture. For sustainable agriculture development, it is important to provide access to education, resource, and leadership opportunities for women especially in rural and impoverished communities. This would not only benefit them, but also strengthen the agricultural sector.

As we celebrate World Milk Day, let us all recognize both the nutritional value of milk, and the hardworking individuals behind it’s production.

Women farmers are helping to shape the future of dairy farming.

Happy World Milk Day! I love milk and I’m hoping you do too.

It’s currently 3:18pm Tuesday
