I wasn’t born strong. I was just the elder daughter.

Grew Up Before I Was Ready – An Elder Daughter’s Story.

I didn’t realise when I stopped being just a child.

Maybe it was around the time I was eight.

An age when most children are still learning how to play, I was quietly learning how to understand people.

I knew when my mother was tired without her saying it.

I knew when something was wrong at home, even if no one spoke about it.

I knew when to stay silent.

That’s the thing about being an elder daughter —

you are not taught responsibility, you absorb it.

I have a younger sibling.

And that’s when I first noticed the difference.

We lived in the same house,

grew up under the same parents,

yet carried very different expectations.

They were allowed to be carefree.

To make mistakes and be forgiven easily.

To be protected.

And I…

I was expected to understand.

“Be mature.”

“Adjust.”

“You are the elder one.”

Those words followed me everywhere.

It didn’t mean I wasn’t loved.

It just meant I was trusted to carry more.

More responsibility.

More patience.

More silence.

I became the second parent without anyone announcing it.

Looking after my sibling, managing small things at home, and slowly learning that my needs could wait.

I don’t remember asking for it.

But I remember accepting it.

Because that’s what elder daughters do —

we step in, even when no one asks us to.

But growing up like that changes you.

You become strong, yes.

You become independent, yes.

But you also learn to hide your emotions.

You learn to solve problems alone.

You learn that asking for help feels like a weakness.

And sometimes, you wonder —

what would it feel like to be the younger one?

To be cared for without being responsible.

To be understood without having to explain everything.

To simply be a child, without the weight of expectations.

Still, I don’t resent my role.

Because being the elder daughter shaped me into someone who can handle life with strength and clarity.

Someone who can stand firm, even when things fall apart.

But let’s be honest —

strength should not always come from pressure.

Elder daughters are not just “the responsible ones.”

We are individuals who learned to grow up early,

who loved deeply,

and who carried more than we showed.

And maybe, just maybe,

we deserve a moment too —

to rest,

to be understood,

and to be cared for…

without having to earn it.
