Once upon a time- in the land of Cyberspace, there came a day unlike any other! The internet, that magical realm of all the information, cat videos, memes and endless scroll decided it was time for a break. Yes,you heard that right — the internet went on vacation!
At first people living on the land did not notice this, but soon minds went into desperation, fingers started twitching. There were error messages on every device. At first everybody thought this might be a mistake- oh a minor glitch which may get corrected in a few minutes.
But nothing happened! Panic ensued! People lost their patience! Glasses were broken! There was pure raw rage everywhere! Along came the abuses! Facebook had gone silent. The birds on X.com had stopped chirping! You tube videos were no longer loading!
But this was not limited to social media platforms. Important mails were not being sent. Banks had crashed, websites had disappeared. Those on video communication, virtual meetings had been left stranded. Stock markets had gone down the drain! Schools called for immediate shutdown. Many businesses had come to complete standstill!
The State of Total Chaos!
People of the land went into panic mode. They were not able to communicate with anyone. Nobody knew what had gone wrong! Has the World War Begun? Is this supposed to be an invasion from the aliens? Is this the End of the World?
People went into shock! They never had envisioned this state. They were paralyzed with fear! Even two people living under the same roof were not able to communicate with each other. They were at a loss for words in the real world! Many had suffered personal losses or commercial losses. They do not know whom to blame for this situation.
A Faint Glimmer of Hope
Slowly, people started communicating with each other. They gathered and started discussing this situation. They found interesting things about each other.
Children were the first to find how to gain from this situation. Schools were shut and they were bored. They gathered outside and started playing, innovating new games on the way. After a long time, they were into physical activity. Hands, fingers as well as eyes which used to play online games were now actually learning to play outdoor games. Since they were new to this, they fell to the ground and hurt themselves. Adjusting to their mistakes they got up and started playing again with renewed energy. The streets were filled with laughter and noises of the children.
Grown up people, taking cues from children rediscovered the lost art of conversation, rekindled friendships, and explored hobbies long forgotten in the digital age.
But there were some people who could not adjust to this internet shutdown. For a generation that has grown up with the internet, its sudden absence was deeply unsettling. These people were restless, anxious and had nervous breakdown. They were so addicted and dependent on the virtual world, that they had forgotten how to live without it. They had no real friends to talk to, no connections to engage themselves and no work to do!
These people lined themselves to seek therapy. Institutions were filled with people who had succumbed to depression.
But Life Must Go On…
As the days turned into weeks, something remarkable happened. People began to realize that life without the internet wasn’t all doom and gloom. There were plenty of things to do offline. Helping people in real life, enjoying the company of people, having real pets, making new friends, enjoying nature walks were some of the activities which people tried and also enjoyed.
Old hard copies of books were dusted off and used for reading, old home theater systems which were rusting in one corner were serviced to be back in action. Some people also dug up their musical instruments and started practicing.
And just when it seemed like the internet would never return from its vacation, a faint glimmer appeared on the horizon. The Wi-Fi signal flickered back to life bringing back the digital world which was lost for a few months.
But things are different now. People approached the internet with a newfound appreciation, recognizing its power to connect and inspire, but also its potential to overwhelm and distract. What was seen as the collapse of the world, now was looked after as a powerful lesson — Digital world can cripple humanity but it cannot replace pure human emotions.
The people of the land made laws to observe a weekly detox day and form real world connections and hence lived happily ever after both online and offline!
