Low pay leads to low effort

Last week, I wrote two pieces entitled I’m Currently on Strike and I’m Still on Strike.

The nub of my argument was that as payments on the platform are currently so low, I don’t feel I can warrant using my brain on full power.

It’s like when I’m trying to save on heating bills: I turn down the temperature and go into survival mode. I wrap up warm, eat soup, and I drink plum brandy instead of Cognac.

Mmm.

The same goes for my writing at the moment. I’m on low power. I’m not thinking too much, I’m not expressing an opinion, and I’m not doing extensive research.

Instead, I’m publishing facts.

Facts and figures one can find on the internet or in a good encyclopedia, and copy out for free.

Last week I published World Cup scores and European country populations. Today is the average temperature of major world capitals.

It’s a subject that has fascinated me since childhood. I used to scan my father’s Times newspaper for the current temperatures around the world.

I lived near Manchester in the UK, which was always cold and wet (even in summer). So I was enthralled to see such exotic places as Luxor and Riyadh with their high, scorching temperatures and pretended I lived there and not in England.

I still enjoy looking at temperatures, especially when they are extreme. I like to experience highs and lows rather than bland mediocrity. Why live in Manchester when you can live in Ulaanbaatar with an average winter temperature of minus 21?

So for your enjoyment, below is a list of major capital cities and their temperatures.

(Note: These temperatures are in Celsius. If you’re still in the Middle Ages and using Fahrenheit, get a grip. Or, for a rough conversion, double the figure and add 30.)

Fascinating stuff, eh?

One of my picks is Mexico City, which I always thought was burning hot all year round, when in actual fact it has a similar climate to Lisbon.
