Walking in the Light: What it Means and Why It Matters

A Study of 1 John 1:5–7

I have a side hustle as an online reseller. I buy clothes from Goodwill and other thrift stores to sell on platforms like eBay and Poshmark. Sometimes, I find what seems to be the perfect high-end piece — sure to fetch a good profit — only to get it home and discover, under better lighting, stains and flaws I couldn’t see in the dimly lit store. The imperfections were there all along, but I didn’t recognize them until they were exposed by the light.

This experience is a lot like what John describes in his first epistle when he writes, “God is light.” Spiritually, we either live in light — where we see reality as it truly is — or in darkness, where we deceive ourselves. Sin doesn’t seem so bad when we’re in the dim light of self-justification, but when we step into the brightness of God’s truth, everything is exposed.

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:5–7

What Does It Mean That “God Is Light”?

John tells us, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Throughout Scripture, light represents holiness, truth, and purity (Psalm 119:105; John 8:12), while darkness symbolizes sin, deception, and separation from God (John 3:19–20). Because God is light, He is completely good and just — there is no moral compromise in Him.

But this raises an important question: If God is light, and we are sinful, how can we have a relationship with Him?

Does God Accept Us as We Are?

Many people believe that because God is loving, He simply accepts us as we are. And yes, God is love (1 John 4:8), and you don’t have to clean yourself up before you can come to Him, but true love isn’t blind acceptance — it calls us out of self-destruction.

A good doctor wouldn’t ignore a life-threatening disease in a patient. Likewise, God does not ignore sin. He calls us out of darkness and into His light, not to shame us, but to heal us.

What Does It Mean to “Walk in the Light”?

Christians often use phrases like “walking in the light” or “How’s your walk with God?” But what does that actually mean?

Walking is an activity and requires willful behavior. Since darkness symbolizes sin, walking in darkness means actively pursuing a life of sin. Many assume that simply believing in God means they are walking in the light, but John warns against this self-deception. True fellowship with God involves more than intellectual belief — it requires transformation.

“You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe — and shudder!” — James 2:19

Signs You’re Walking in Darkness

If someone is living in darkness, what does that look like? Here are three warning signs:

  1. Hiding Sin — Covering up sins instead of confessing them.
  2. Excusing Sin — Justifying or redefining sin instead of repenting.
  3. Avoiding Accountability — Keeping struggles secret instead of seeking help and growth.

This is especially relevant in the digital age. Hidden sins like pornography thrive in secrecy, but accountability software and godly community can help bring struggles into the light.

Can a Christian Walk in Darkness?

If a Christian sins, does that mean they lose their salvation? My belief is that if a person pursues a life of sin, it could be evidence that they were never saved at all. John is not addressing occasional failures but a lifestyle of unrepentant sin. A true believer may stumble, but they won’t remain in rebellion indefinitely.

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.” — 1 John 2:19

While some who profess faith were never truly saved, others are genuine believers who temporarily fall into sin. The difference is that a real Christian will ultimately repent and return to the light.

What Does Walking in the Light Look Like?

Walking in the light doesn’t mean being perfect — it means being honest before God. Think about a child who spills juice on a white carpet. If they confess it immediately, the stain can be cleaned. If they hide it, it sets in and becomes much harder to remove.

Here are three marks of walking in the light:

  1. Honesty About Sin — No more pretending; admitting the truth.
  2. Repentance and Trust — Relying on Christ’s cleansing rather than self-improvement.
  3. Fellowship with Others — Living in authentic community, not isolation.

Why This Matters

Why does any of this matter? Can’t we just try harder to be good people?

Walking in the light isn’t about self-help — it’s about truth. We don’t need self-improvement; we need Christ’s cleansing. Jesus, being fully God and fully man, lived the perfect life and became the only substitute for sinful humanity. We need His light to transform us.

Are You Walking in the Light?

So, where are you? Are you walking in the light, or are you hiding in darkness?

  • Spend time in Scripture, allowing God’s truth to shine on your life.
  • Confess hidden struggles to God and to a trusted believer.
  • Pray for a heart that desires light over darkness.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
