Affluence Begets Effluence

Affluence Begets Effluence captures one of the many unresolved flaws of capitalism, that rising wealth increases consumption, and this depletes resources, increases waste and causes considerable environmental damage including air, water and land pollution, climate change, ecological breakdown, biodiversity loss and extinction. While capitalism has raised living standards for many people, others have been left behind, and a few have accumulated vast amounts of wealth.

The definition of affluence can be narrow or broad. It has no single global threshold because it varies over time and between different countries. It generally refers to having more than enough income and/or wealth to live comfortably with financial security and choice. It is widespread but concentrated in countries with developed economies and it is growing in countries with emerging economies such as China and India.

If affluence is defined narrowly to only include billionaires and millionaires, it comprises about 60 million people, 0.7% of the total population or 1% of the global adult population. If it is defined broadly to include people with a net wealth above US$100,000, which is often used as the lower boundary for affluence, it comprises about 720 million people or about 9% of the global population. The remaining billions, including most of the 3.5 to 4 billion middle class or 40 to 50% of the world’s population, do not meet the typical affluence threshold.

A small number of millionaires fall within the middle-class category — it depends on how both terms are defined. In high-income countries, asset inflation, especially housing, has pushed some middle-income households into millionaire status and they may be considered affluent by global standards. A household with a modest salary but a fully paid-off home in a city like Sydney or London may have well over US$1 million in net worth. In low and middle-income countries, affluence is rare and concentrated among small elites and being a millionaire almost always places them well above the middle class.

Affluence occurs on a progressive scale with billionaires and multimillionaires at the top, then millionaires and then the middle class following a decreasing sliding scale of wealth. Although billionaires have the greatest impact on the environment the global middle class has a substantial effect because their huge size scales up their impact. As people move into middle-income lifestyles, consumption increases — more energy use, transport, housing space, and material goods. This expansion is closely linked to resource use, rising emissions and environmental degradation, making the behaviour of the middle class a key factor in climate and sustainability outcomes.

There are over three thousand billionaires and millions of millionaires in the world. These are the ultra-rich, and individually, they have a much greater impact on the environment than anyone else, and a significantly disproportional impact for their small size. Billionaires make up about 0.00005% of the total global adult population and millionaires make up about 1%. About a third of all billionaires and millionaires come from the United States and in decreasing order they come from China, India, Germany, Russia, Canada, Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and countries in Europe.

Effluence is the outflow of waste, pollutants and by-products from human activities into the environment. Effluents are the solids, liquids and gases released from households, industries, agriculture and transport systems, including, but not limited to, plastic waste, e-waste, food waste, sewage, agricultural runoff, particulates and nitrogen oxides.

Carbon dioxide is arguably the most studied of the pollutants, and carbon emissions are a good proxy for the overall environmental impact of an individual on the planet. There is a direct relationship between affluence and emissions and the ultra-rich have by far the highest levels. Between 1990 and 2015, the richest 1% of the global population were responsible for more than twice the carbon emissions of the poorest 50%. The carbon footprint of the ultra-rich is comparable to that of millions of people. Some emit more CO2 in a day or in a single plane or boat trip than an average person emits in a year.

Affluence reflects access to energy, capital and resources, not just income. It is closely linked to consumption patterns, which is why it plays a central role in environmental impact discussions. Greater purchasing power enables the ultra-rich to consume more goods and services, and this translates into faster product turnover, increased energy use, resource depletion, waste, and pollution. Each stage of the economic system — extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal — generates more CO2 and this results in a larger carbon footprint. The main drivers are property, transport and investments — the ownership of multiple homes, private jets, luxury yachts, high-performance vehicles and corporate assets linked to high-emission industries.

Affluent people usually live in large, high-end homes which typically include multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, expansive kitchens and living areas, and extensive heating, cooling, and appliance systems. At the highest levels of wealth, the ultra-rich may own several such homes, each equipped with features like pools, gyms, tennis courts, garages for multiple vehicles, and even private infrastructure such as helipads, runways, or marinas.

These large homes have significant environmental impacts. Their construction requires large quantities of materials such as wood, concrete, steel, and glass. Producing and transporting these materials consumes energy, depletes natural resources, and generates waste. The homes also occupy large areas of land, which can lead to deforestation, habitat fragmentation and disruption of local ecosystems. When built in suburban or rural areas, they contribute to urban sprawl and increase dependence on cars.

Ongoing house maintenance further increases their environmental footprint. Large homes use more water due to multiple bathrooms, appliances, and large gardens and pools. They also consume more energy, even when fitted with efficient systems. The abundance of space and facilities tends to encourage higher levels of consumption, reinforcing wasteful patterns of resource use. Affluent households also purchase more goods, replace them more frequently, and generate more packaging and waste. Food waste is also higher due to over-purchasing and having greater storage capacity.

Transport is another major cause of effluence. Wealth enables frequent long-distance travel, especially air travel, which has high emissions and limited low-carbon alternatives. Private jets and high-performance vehicles intensify the impact of the ultra-rich lifestyle on the environment due to their high energy use per person. A single short to medium length private jet flight can emit 5 tonnes of CO₂ and a long-haul transcontinental flight can emit up to 30 tonnes. By comparison the global average person emits about 4 to 5 tonnes per year. A single private jet flight can therefore equal a full year of emissions for one person, and long flights can exceed that many times.

The financial choices of affluent individuals also shape the economy through investments in industries such as fossil fuel, mining and industrial agriculture, which drive large-scale ecological damage and amplify environmental harm beyond personal consumption. In simple terms, affluence multiplies environmental impact both directly, through lifestyle choices, and indirectly, through economic influence.

The environmental effects of affluence are extensive and global. Impacts extend beyond national borders, as production and disposal are often outsourced to poorer regions, leading to pollution and health risks in those areas. Wealth concentration also amplifies inequality and political influence, allowing affluent groups to shape policies in ways that may delay environmental action. International coordination is essential but difficult, as wealth can be moved across borders to avoid regulation.

Addressing the environmental costs of affluence requires a shift in both policy and culture. Governments must implement strong regulations and taxation to limit high-impact consumption and redirect investment, and taxation policies need to focus on high-consumption groups rather than the general population.

At the same time, societies need to redefine success away from material accumulation toward wellbeing, efficiency, and ecological balance. Without these changes, rising wealth will continue to drive environmental decline. With them, it is possible to achieve a form of prosperity that operates within planetary limits.
