Stop Using AIDA for Everything. Here’s Why.
You learned AIDA. Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. You started using it everywhere — product listings, emails, social captions, and landing pages. And it worked… sometimes.
But sometimes it felt off. Stiff. Like you were following a script the reader could see through.
That’s because AIDA isn’t a universal law. It’s one tool. And like any tool, it works brilliantly in the right situation and poorly in the wrong one.
AIDA Is for Cold Audiences
AIDA works when the reader doesn’t know you yet. You grab their attention, warm them up, build desire, then push for action. It’s a journey from stranger to buyer.
Use it for: ads, landing pages, cold emails, product listings.
But here’s where people go wrong — they use AIDA on someone who already has a problem screaming in their head. Someone who doesn’t need warming up. They need relief.
PAS Is for Pain-Aware Audiences
PAS — Problem, Agitate, Solution — skips the slow build entirely.
You name the problem. You twist the knife just enough to make the reader feel it. Then you offer the way out.
Tired of writing product listings that get views but zero sales? You tweak the title. You rewrite the bullets. Nothing changes. Here’s what you’re missing.
That’s PAS in three sentences. It works because the reader already knows their problem — you just proved you understand it too. Trust is built instantly.
Use it for: blog intros, email subject lines, social posts, service pages.
The Simple Rule
Ask yourself one question before you write anything:
Does my reader already know they have a problem?
If no — use AIDA. Attract them, educate them, then convert them.
If yes — use PAS. Meet them where the pain is and get to the solution fast.
The best copywriters don’t pick a favorite formula. They read the room first.
Now go back to the last thing you wrote. Which one did you use, and was it the right choice?
