The Ranjitham Villa: Horror Story

There was nothing unusual about Ranjithame Villa.

Standing quietly in a busy neighbourhood of Chennai, the two-story building looked like every other rental house in the city. Clothes hung from balconies, children played cricket in the evenings, college students argued over assignments, and working couples hurried to their offices every morning.

People came and went.

Life moved on.

No one ever questioned the villa.

Until Vinoth and his wife moved in.

Freshly married, they rented a small apartment on the first floor. It wasn’t luxurious, but it felt perfect for a new beginning. The neighbors welcomed them warmly, and within a few days, they had settled into their new home.

Across the corridor lived a group of engineering students.

They were noisy, carefree, and rarely slept before midnight. Their apartment was always filled with laughter, loud music, and the smell of instant noodles.

For the first few days, everyone got along.

Then one ordinary morning changed everything.

Vinoth and his wife left for work as usual. After locking the door, they disappeared down the staircase.

A few minutes later, one of the students stepped out of his room.

He looked around the corridor and noticed the neatly placed doormat outside Vinoth’s apartment.

Assuming it had been left there for everyone to use, he picked it up and placed it in front of his own room before walking back inside without another thought.

It was a simple mistake.

One that should have ended with a small apology.

Instead, it became the beginning of something far darker.

That evening, Vinoth returned home and immediately noticed the missing doormat.

After searching the corridor, he found it outside the students’ room.

He knocked.

The door opened.

When he asked who had taken it, one of the students casually admitted that he thought it belonged to the common area.

Another student laughed.

That laugh echoed through the corridor.

Without saying another word, Vinoth slapped him.

The sound silenced everyone.

“You should have asked before touching something that wasn’t yours,” he said before walking away.

The student stood frozen.

His cheek burned.

His pride burned even more.

As Vinoth disappeared into his apartment, the student whispered quietly,

“I’ll make him regret this.”

That night, the students gathered outside the villa.

What began as anger slowly turned into a plan.

None of them realized that revenge would become the least frightening thing waiting for them.

Inside the apartment, Vinoth and his wife tried to forget the unpleasant incident.

They cooked dinner.

They laughed.

For a while, everything felt normal again.

Then they heard a loud metallic sound from the kitchen.

Vinoth walked in.

Milk had boiled over the vessel.

The gas stove was burning.

He turned it off and returned to the bedroom.

“You forgot to switch off the gas,” he told his wife.

She looked at him, puzzled.

“I already turned it off.”

Neither of them argued.

Neither of them could explain it.

Moments later, the lights flickered.

The room became strangely silent.

Vinoth looked around.

Everything appeared peaceful.

Soft blue light filled the room.

Flowers seemed to bloom across the floor.

A crystal-clear stream flowed where the tiles should have been.

The air felt calm.

Beautiful.

His wife saw none of it.

The walls around her had turned blood red.

Dark smoke spread across the ceiling.

Shadows moved where no one stood.

The room looked as though it had been consumed by fire.

She grabbed Vinoth’s arm.

“We have to leave.”

He smiled.

“Leave? Everything is beautiful.”

She stared at him in disbelief.

They were standing in the same room.

Yet they were living in two completely different worlds.

Her heartbeat grew faster.

She rushed toward the front door and pulled it open.

Cool night air entered the apartment.

“Please,” she begged.

“Come with me.”

Instead of following her, Vinoth closed his eyes.

Softly, he began chanting.

“Om Namah Shivaya…”

Again.

And again.

Each chant seemed louder than the last, as though the walls themselves had joined him.

Back in the kitchen, the gas stove turned on by itself.

The flame appeared without anyone touching it.

Milk began boiling once more.

When Vinoth turned around, his face glowed with an icy blue light.

His eyes had become completely white.

His wife stepped backward in terror.

Then something changed inside her as well.

Her face slowly glowed deep red.

Her pupils disappeared.

Neither of them recognized the other anymore.

Outside the apartment, loud knocks shattered the silence.

The chanting stopped.

The lights returned to normal.

Their faces looked ordinary again.

The students had arrived.

They knocked harder.

No answer.

The door slowly opened on its own.

The apartment was empty.

There was no sign of Vinoth.

No sign of his wife.

Only the sound of boiling milk filled the silence.

The gas stove was still burning.

The missing doormat lay perfectly in the center of the room.

One of the students whispered,

“Where did they go?”

No one answered.

Then, from somewhere deep inside the darkness, a voice spoke.

“We’ve been here all along.”

The corridor lights went out.

One after another.

Until the entire villa disappeared into darkness.

The neighbors would later say they heard a scream that night.

No one could ever explain where it came from.

But from that day onward, every tenant who moved into Ranjithame Villa claimed the same thing.

The house never showed everyone the same reality.
