The Day I Stopped Negotiating With Ghosts
The worst thing I thought could happen… did.
The Day I Stopped Negotiating With Ghosts
The worst thing I thought could happen… did.
It just wasn’t the worst thing that happened to me.

January 28, 2026.
I remember exactly where I was.
Hard not to.
I was one of the few people still working from home.
Funny enough…
January 28th wasn’t actually the day I lost my job.
It was the day everyone else found out I’d already lost it.
The signs had been there for months.
Sometimes you don’t know what’s coming.
Sometimes…you absolutely do.
The afternoon before, I wrapped up what I could.
Finished the conversations that mattered.
Made peace with the people I’d worked alongside.
Even joked about it.
“…provided I’m still around then.”
Later that evening, before logging off, I left one final message to my live-streaming family.
“Goodnight everyone. I hope to see all y’all tomorrow. If for whatever reason I don’t, I won’t be hard to find.”
I wasn’t trying to predict the future.
I was simply refusing to leave anything unsaid if I happened to be right.
Looking back…
I think that’s when the peace actually started.
By the time they laid me off…
I’d already said goodbye.
— -
I expected panic.
Anger?
Yeah, a little.
Like I said, the signals had been there for a while. Clearly.
Embarrassment?
Not really.
It was just my turn.
Shame?
No.
I’d left it all on the field the night before.
I knew it was coming.
What I didn’t expect…
…was peace.
Not immediately.
But surprisingly quickly.
The thing I’d spent years quietly negotiating with had finally happened.
And I was still standing.
— -
Looking back now…
I don’t think I was negotiating with managers.
Or promotions.
Or performance reviews.
I was negotiating with ghosts.
Ghosts of old feedback.
Ghosts of old failures.
Ghosts of imagined consequences.
Ghosts that only existed because I’d never forced them into the light.
Ghosts that whispered…
”Don’t push too hard.”
”Maybe you’re wrong.”
”Keep your head down.”
”You don’t want to be that guy.”
”If they don’t like this…”
”If you’re difficult…”
”If you’re wrong…”
”If you lose your job…”
Then one day…
I did.
And something unexpected happened.
The ghosts lost.
Not because I defeated them.
Because I finally realized they’d been bluffing the whole time.
They couldn’t threaten me with something that had already happened.
— -
Something else changed after January 28th.
I stopped trying to be right.
I started trying to be useful.
That’s a completely different operating system.
Not long after, I stopped waiting for permission.
Not permission to speak.
Not permission to care.
Permission to solve the problems nobody officially owned.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped chasing job descriptions.
I started chasing the work itself.
The messy problems.
The uncomfortable ones.
The ones that sat between organizations because they were inconvenient.
The funny thing is…
That’s when opportunities started finding me.
Not because I suddenly became smarter.
Not because I stopped making mistakes.
I reckon it was because I stopped negotiating with imaginary consequences.
Months later, I wrote down the work I believed needed to exist.
A new function.
A different way of approaching technical leadership.
Part architecture.
Part engineering.
Part business development.
Part translator between organizations.
During a one-on-one, I mentioned the document to my manager.
He laughed.
Then he slid a job description across the desk.
It was almost exactly what I’d written.
We hadn’t coordinated.
Neither of us was trying to convince the other.
We had simply arrived at the same conclusion from different directions.
That was the moment it finally clicked.
I’d been measuring success all wrong.
It was never about collecting titles.
It was about becoming someone people trusted with the problems that didn’t come with a playbook.
The messy ones.
The uncomfortable ones.
The ones that mattered.
— -
So…
Twenty-seven years.
One layoff.
I’d say that’s still a pretty respectable record.
And the ghosts?
Turns out they were terrible managers anyway.
