Topic: God Is Holy Text: 1 John 1:5–6

We have been discussing some of the core attributes of God. These attributes are not merely what God does but are inherent to who He is, such as love and truth. Today, we will consider His holiness.

God is holy, but what does the Bible mean by this?

The holiness of God refers to His absolute moral purity and His complete separation from all corruption and evil. To be holy is to be pure in oneself and entirely set apart from anything corrupt or capable of corruption.

Scripture says that God is “Holy, Holy, Holy” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8). This threefold expression is a literary device in which a word or phrase is repeated three times to communicate intensity and fullness.

Similar expressions appear elsewhere in Scripture. In Jeremiah 7:4, the people repeatedly cried, “The temple of the LORD,” expressing misplaced confidence in outward religion despite their corruption. Other examples of this threefold emphasis appear in Jeremiah 22:29 and Ezekiel 21:27.

This expression also beautifully reflects the triune nature of God, revealing that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share the same holiness and majesty. Christ is called “the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24), and the Spirit is revealed as the Holy Spirit.

It is important to note that both Isaiah’s vision and John’s revelation portray the angels continually crying, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” because God is eternally and unchangingly holy.

This corrects the common misconception that the God of the Old Testament is merely wrathful while the God of the New Testament is loving. God does not change. His holiness, love, justice, and mercy are eternally consistent.

In our Bible text, John writes, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all,” emphasizing God’s absolute purity and holiness. He then explains that we cannot claim fellowship with God while walking in darkness (1 John 1:5–6).

Beloved, God commanded Israel through Moses, “You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). Peter repeats this instruction to believers in 1 Peter 1:15–16, calling us to holiness because God Himself is holy.

Light has no fellowship with darkness. Through Christ, God has redeemed us from darkness and restored us to fellowship with Himself (Colossians 1:13).

Now, having received the righteousness of God in Christ and fellowship through the Spirit, we must no longer walk in the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). Our lives should reflect the holy nature of the God we serve.
