Why I Built a ‘Privacy-First’ Feng Shui AI Subtitle: In an era of cloud-hungry apps, I wanted to prove that ancient spatial wisdom doesn’t need your personal photos to work.
We live in a time where “AI” often feels like a trade-off. To get a “personalized” insight, we are usually expected to upload our private data — our photos, our floor plans, even our habits — to some remote server, hoping they’ll stay secure.
As someone deeply interested in the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern technology, I’ve been studying Feng Shui (specifically the Five Elements/Wu Xing philosophy) for years. I wanted to see if modern spatial scanning could help people identify energy flow issues — like stagnant corners, cluttered “wealth paths,” or misaligned work zones.
But every time I looked at existing interior design or Feng Shui apps, I hit a wall: The Privacy Wall.
Most of these tools require you to upload high-resolution images of your bedroom or office to their cloud. For many, that’s a non-negotiable risk. Your home is your most private sanctuary. Why should you have to send pictures of it to a database just to learn how to balance your living room’s energy?
The “Local-First” Experiment
I decided to take a different path. Instead of building a “cloud-heavy” product, I spent the last few months working on a prototype that uses Client-Side Spatial Intelligence.
In short: the entire AI analysis engine runs right inside your browser. When you take a photo of your space for a scan, the image data never travels to a server, never touches a database, and is never stored. Once you refresh your browser, the data is gone.
I wanted to prove that you don’t need a massive infrastructure to get “intelligent” results. By combining lightweight computer vision with classical spatial principles, I built a tool that can instantly identify layout frictions — like clutter zones or elemental imbalances — entirely on your own device.
Is Tech-Enabled Feng Shui Just a Gimmick?
This is the question I grapple with daily. Is this helpful, or is it just “gamifying” an ancient art?
What I’ve found is that the value isn’t in the AI “telling” you your future. The value is in the calibration. Many of us live in spaces that have accumulated “clutter gravity” without us noticing. Sometimes, a neutral, analytical pair of eyes (even if they are digital) is enough to spark that aha! moment where you realize: “Oh, that’s why I haven’t been sleeping well.”
I’m still iterating on this project, but I’m convinced that the future of wellness tech should be private, local, and empowering — not extractive.
Join the Experiment
If you’re a privacy enthusiast, a tech tinkerer, or someone just curious about how your environment is affecting your daily flow, I’d love for you to test this.
You can try the spatial scanner yourself — zero uploads, total privacy — right here: https://eastern-five-elements.vercel.app/scan/
I’m looking for honest feedback: Does this actually help you reorganize your space, or do you prefer the old-school, manual way of doing things? Let me know in the comments.
