Artesian and the idea of refinement

There is a certain weight to a place like Artesian.

Not just because of where it sits — inside The Langham — but because of what it represents. Few bars have shaped modern cocktail culture in quite the same way. Fewer still have held the title of “best in the world” as many times.

It would be easy for a bar like this to lean into that history.

It doesn’t.

Instead, the current menu moves in a quieter direction. Less about statement, more about refinement. The focus is on classics, but filtered through a distinctly British lens. Ingredients feel closer to the ground; roots, herbs, subtle savoury notes, without losing the structure that defines the original drinks.

The Currant sets the tone early. Light, fresh, but with enough depth to keep it from disappearing. It’s simple on the surface, but deliberate in how it holds flavour.

The Parsnip shifts the perspective. Built in the direction of an espresso martini, it leans deeper. Coffee is still the anchor, but the addition of parsnip brings a savoury sweetness that rounds the drink out. It doesn’t overpower, it reframes.

Then there is the Odi, which plays with texture. Banana, but clarified. What should feel heavy instead becomes light, almost weightless. The flavour remains, but the structure changes entirely.

The Kombu returns to something more familiar. A Boulevardier at its core, but with an added layer of earthiness. Balanced, controlled, and quietly complex.

Beyond the highlights, the menu continues in that same direction.

The Wild Strawberry opens things up. Bright, fresh, slightly herbal, with a structure that nods to a lychee martini but feels more restrained.

The Hawthorn, in a Garibaldi direction, stays clean and precise. Citrus-led, but balanced.

The CEP moves further into savoury territory. A Negroni variation that carries cheese notes without becoming heavy. It reads almost like an aperitivo course in itself.

What ties everything together is not creativity alone, but control.

None of the drinks feel excessive. Nothing pushes too far. Each one lands exactly where it needs to.

Service reinforces that balance. Friendly, relaxed, but technically sharp. There is no need to over-explain. The drinks speak clearly enough.

At 4.7 out of 5, Artesian remains one of the most complete cocktail experiences in London.

Not because it tries to redefine what a cocktail bar should be.

But because it shows how far refinement can go when everything unnecessary is stripped away.
