Let’s Be Honest About Death Piles

Your death pile is a problem, and admitting you have a problem is the first step in recovery.

If it’s not listed, it’s not going to sell. Period. Yet so many resellers (including me) fall into the same trap: sourcing is fun, listing feels like work. Thrifting gives you the dopamine hit. Cleaning, steaming, photographing, and listing? That’s the vegetables of reselling — good for you, but not exactly thrilling.

Reframe the situation: death piles = debt piles. Every item sitting unlisted is money you’ve already spent that’s not earning you a dime. Those jeans in the corner? They’re not “inventory,” they’re tied-up assets. And until they’re listed, they’re just clutter with a price tag. When you look at your death pile in this way, it will push you to take action on it (more on that below).

Why We Do It (And Why It Hurts)

We love the hunt. Scoring a killer deal or finding that rare vintage piece feels like winning the lottery. But then life happens — jobs, kids, Netflix binges — and suddenly your “money pile” is a mountain. Meanwhile, your cash flow is frozen because your profits are sitting in a tote bin in the back of your closet.

For me, the biggest reason my death pile got started was not setting the time aside to photograph. Reselling is my side hustle, so with life and other commitments getting in the way, that left little spare time to dedicate to my business. And I would “forget” to work on my business if I didn’t consciously prioritize doing the work.

It’s not complicated; I sourced more than I listed — plain and simple. A couple months of that and I had a nice sized stack of clothes waiting for me. And if you’re not honest with yourself and your business, it can happen to you.

How to Dig Out (really, it’s possible)

As a recovering death-piler, here’s what works for me:

  • Rule: No sourcing until you list. Implement a rule that you can’t source until you’ve listed what you have. Cut the problem off at the source (pun intended). I know, it’s harsh to force yourself to not do the fun part of reselling, but you need to stop the pile from accumulating. If you don’t, you’ll never dig your way out of it.
  • Break it down. Add structure to your routine, which means setting small, achievable goals. “I’ll photograph 20 today.” Then do it again tomorrow. Whatever is realistic, achievable on your schedule, and specific.
  • Pick a lane. Hate photographing shoes? Don’t start there. Grab the stack of jeans and power through. Similar items = rhythm = less mental friction.
  • Start with your favorite piece. That one item you’re excited about? Photograph it first. Momentum is magic.
  • Make it a date. I have a full-time job, so weekends are my only window. If I don’t block time, it doesn’t happen. Treat it like an appointment with your business — because it is.
  • Consider consignment. Skip the photographing. Look for faster ways to get rid of unlisted inventory, like consignment shops (Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads, or maybe you have some local ones near you). Be cautious with this, as you will likely not make as much profit as you would on Poshmark, eBay, or the like. If you’re hesitant, try it out on some low-risk items, like ones with a low COGS.

The Bottom Line

Death piles aren’t just messy — they’re expensive. Every unlisted item is money you can’t touch. So stop hoarding like a thrift dragon and start listing like a boss. Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you.
