The Day You Meet Yourself Is the Day You Will Be Liberated

You have what it takes

The only time you were completely yourself was probably before you turned three.

You laughed when you felt like laughing. You cried for the slightest thing that hurt you. You loved through your heart and instinct. They say if a baby doesn’t like you, you’re probably not a good person because babies can sense things adults often ignore. Everything was beautiful from your perspective.

Then you started school.

You were taught how to sit, how to walk, when to speak, when to cry, and when to laugh. You were influenced on who you should like and who you should dislike. You were told not to overshare, not to be this, not to be that.

That was normal. Society was molding you so you could fit in.

“Don’t be socially awkward, Ken,” your mum would say. “You can’t do that. People will think you’re weird.”

“You’re a teenager now. You shouldn’t do this.”

It’s okay to want to fit in, but to what extent?

Now you’re an adult doing socially acceptable things, so you won’t be excommunicated for laughing too loudly in a meeting. You can’t show too much emotion. You can’t love with your whole heart because they’ll call you clingy.

You probably ignore red flags because all colours start as white.

You can’t stand being alone because, apparently, that makes you strange. Why would anyone want to be alone all the time?

But maybe you’re afraid of being alone because then you’d have to sit with yourself. You’d have to face your feelings. You’d have to see yourself.

So you’re always around people, or a little tipsy, because a foggy mind is easier to live with than a quiet one. Maybe you take sleeping pills or smoke a blunt because sleep won’t come naturally. Falling asleep naturally requires your monsters to calm down, and they don’t seem interested in doing that.

But have you met yourself?

Because beneath all that noise is a beautiful heart, capable of loving deeply, overflowing with care and laughter. And your monsters can calm down if you sit with them long enough to heal.

It’s all in your head: the past, the present, and the future.

Being alive is living.

I don’t mean laughing too loudly in every meeting. There has to be a system. But you can meet yourself at the door every evening when you get home. Embrace that person. Be that person.

Surround yourself with people who like that person. The real you.

You are an AMAZING human being, and the day you truly meet yourself, you will love who you find.
