3 Things Your IELTS Examiner Does (And Why You Shouldn’t Panic)
If you have ever taken the IELTS Speaking test, you probably remember the feeling of sitting across the table, watching the examiner’s every move. When they look down, your heart drops. When they stop you from speaking, you assume you have failed.
As a former IELTS examiner and a teacher with 15 years of experience, I know exactly how stressful that room can be. But I also know a secret: candidates constantly misread the examiner’s behavior. You assume every action is a judgment of your English, when in reality, it is usually just a test procedure.
If you want to perform at your best and hit that 7.0 or higher, you need to stop panicking over things that do not matter. Here are three things the examiner does during your test, what they actually mean, and why you can finally take a deep breath.
1. We Cut You Off in the Middle of a Sentence
This is the number one cause of panic in the exam room. You are in Part 3, giving a fantastic answer about the environment, and suddenly the examiner interrupts you and asks a completely different question.
Most candidates immediately think: I talked too much. I went off-topic. My grammar was terrible.
The truth is much simpler: we are just out of time.
The IELTS Speaking test is strictly timed to the second. Examiners have a specific number of questions they must ask you to properly assess your language. If you give a long, detailed answer (which is a good thing!), we might have to interrupt you to ensure we have enough time to test you on a different topic or grammatical structure.
An interruption is not a penalty. It is just the clock ticking. Take a breath and answer the next question.
2. We Write Things Down While You Are Speaking
In Part 1 and Part 2 of the test, you will often see the examiner look down at their desk and write something with their pencil.
It is human nature to think they are marking down your mistakes. You accidentally say “he have” instead of “he has,” the examiner looks down to write, and your confidence completely disappears.
Here is what is really happening: we are writing down the time.
Examiners must keep a precise log of when the test starts, when Part 2 begins, and how long your monologue lasts. When we look down and scribble a number, 99% of the time, it is just a timestamp for the recording. We do not have a checklist where we cross off points for every vocabulary error you make. Ignore the pencil and keep talking.
3. We Have a “Poker Face”
Many students walk out of the test room feeling defeated because the examiner was “cold.” They didn’t smile, they didn’t laugh at a joke, and they barely nodded. Candidates assume the examiner disliked them or their English.
Please do not take this personally. Examiners are heavily trained to be neutral. It’s just part of the job.
The IELTS must be completely fair for everyone. A candidate taking the test in Tokyo must get the exact same experience as a candidate taking it in London or São Paulo. If an examiner smiles too much, nods enthusiastically, or acts like your best friend, it might give you a false sense of how well you are scoring.
We keep our faces neutral to protect the fairness of the test. A blank stare does not mean you are getting a Band 5.0. It just means the examiner is doing their job professionally.
The Takeaway
The examiner is not a trap-setter. We are language lovers who genuinely want to hear you speak well. We are actively listening for positive features in your English, not searching for reasons to fail you. Once you understand that our behavior is about the test rules — not about you — you can finally relax and show us your true ability.
