Listen to Your Children. Don’t Scare Them.

The digital world has made life easier, but it has also created new risks for children.

Today, someone can misuse a child’s photograph, create fake or inappropriate images and videos using technology, or threaten them online. When this happens, many children become frightened and confused. Instead of telling their parents, they may remain silent or even give money to the person threatening them.

This is where parents can make the biggest difference.

If your child comes to you and says that something is wrong, the first thing you should do is listen.

Don’t immediately ask:

“**Why did you do this?”

“Why did you send the photo?” “Why didn’t you tell us earlier?”**

Your child may already be scared enough.

Instead, say:

“I’m glad you told me. You did the right thing. Don’t be afraid. I am with you, and we will handle this together.”

Those simple words can give a frightened child the courage to face a difficult situation.

Trust Your Child Before Judging the Situation

A photo or video does not always tell the whole story. With modern technology and AI, images can be manipulated and misused.

So, before blaming your child, listen to their complete story.

A child should never feel that they will be punished or shamed for coming to their parents for help.

If children know that their parents will listen first and judge later, they are much more likely to speak up when something goes wrong.

What Should Parents Do?

If your child faces online harassment, blackmailing or misuse of their photographs:

• Stay calm and listen carefully.
• Do not blame, shame or threaten the child.
• Save screenshots, chats, profiles and other evidence.
• Do not panic and send money to someone who is blackmailing you.
• Seek help from a trusted adult or the appropriate authorities.
• In India, cybercrime can be reported through the 1930 cybercrime helpline.

Most importantly, do not leave the child alone with their fear.

Build a Home Where Children Can Speak

Online safety is not only about parental controls and restricting screen time.

It is also about creating a relationship where a child knows:

“Whatever happens, I can tell my parents.”

Talk to your children about their online life. Ask what apps they use, who they interact with and whether anything online has ever made them uncomfortable.

And remind them regularly:

“Even if you make a mistake, you can always come and talk to us.”

Because when a child is afraid of their parents, they may hide a problem.

But when a child trusts their parents, they are more likely to ask for help before the situation becomes worse.

One Message Every Parent Should Remember

If someone misuses your child’s photograph, the child is not the person who should be blamed.

The responsibility lies with the person who misused it.

So listen to your children. Believe them. Support them.
