Jurgen Klopp Was Right!

It has not even been a full week since Jurgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager and now Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, delivered a sharp criticism of the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC). For those who are unaware, the CWC is now held every four years with a new format that includes 32 clubs, runs for an entire month, and takes place during the European domestic league off-season.

This change has sparked a wave of criticism, one of the loudest voices being Klopp, who called the new format “the worst idea ever implemented in football.” And it’s hard to argue at a time when players should be enjoying their hard-earned rest after a grueling season, they are instead forced back into action in a tournament that is not only long but also arguably unnecessary.

Some have attempted to defend this format. A common argument is that clubs will only play a maximum of seven matches. However, even that number is no small feat for professional athletes who are already physically drained. Especially in today’s packed football calendar, which includes international tournaments like the Euros, Copa America, and World Cup qualifiers. Taken together, the workload on players is increasing drastically.

Take the NBA, for comparison, a league that also has a heavy schedule. NBA players still receive up to four months of rest in a year. Meanwhile, footballers involved in the CWC will only get around three to four weeks off before reporting back to their clubs for preseason training. The risk of injury becomes much higher, and mental fatigue is inevitable.

Klopp’s long-time rival in England, Pep Guardiola, has voiced a similar concern. He wasn’t surprised by Klopp’s comments and even leaned in agreement. “Maybe in November, December, and January, a disaster will happen. We will be exhausted,” Pep said in a press conference. Even the current England national team manager, Thomas Tuchel, remarked that clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool will actually have a big advantage by not participating in this year’s CWC. Unlike their title-race rivals, Chelsea and Manchester City, who will be forced to drain their energy in this tournament.

And sure enough, those concerns are starting to come true. Bayern Munich’s young star, Jamal Musiala, suffered a serious injury after their match against PSG in the CWC group stage. Musiala, who had only just recovered from a long-term injury, had to go back under the knife after a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Medical reports stated that Musiala had fractured his fibula and sustained ligament damage, ruling him out for the next four to five months.

This incident should be a wake-up call that the CWC’s current format needs to be reconsidered. Rather than becoming a prestigious global tournament, it is instead putting players’ health and careers at risk. It would be far better to return to the previous format, held mid-season, with a limited number of teams, and without compromising players’ recovery time during the off-season.

Let’s hope Musiala recovers quickly and returns to his best form.
