Digital Aadhaar App Set to Replace Physical Cards, Introduce Face Authentication

The Government of India is gearing up to launch a next-gen Aadhaar app that will eliminate the need for carrying physical or photocopied Aadhaar cards. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and IT and developed by UIDAI, the app is currently undergoing beta testing and is expected to roll out soon.

The new Aadhaar app will leverage facial recognition and QR code technology to make digital identity verification seamless and secure. The app is also getting a redesigned interface, offering a major upgrade from the existing mAadhaar app.

Secure, Simplified Identity Sharing

Announcing the development on X, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Now with just a tap, users can share only the necessary data. Aadhaar verification becomes as easy as UPI — just scan a QR code or use a requesting app.”

He also emphasized that users won’t need to carry or share printed Aadhaar copies anymore. This move is set to simplify verification processes at hotels, stores, and airports, offering full digital check-ins with user-controlled data sharing.

Face Authentication Gaining Momentum

A standout feature of the new app is Aadhaar Face Authentication, already seeing traction with over 15 crore monthly verifications across sectors. UIDAI confirmed that early access has been granted to participants of the Aadhaar Samvaad event. Public availability is expected soon, post user feedback.
