LOVING SOMEONE WITH TRUST ISSUES

Let’s talk about something people are usually afraid of, or too ignorant to talk about.

Loving someone? with trust issues? Tough.

It’s not easy to love someone with trust issues. But that doesn’t mean they are not lovable or that they are hard to love. As a girl with a completely different level of trust issues, I myself find it difficult to trust someone, love toh dur ki baat hai. And this whole “they have trust issues, they must have been cheated on, pakka kata hoga” or “they must have had many exes” allegation is so wrong. I know these can be valid reasons, but they are not the only reasons. Some people develop trust issues because of their families. Sounds funny? For some, it will be relatable. You can’t immediately conclude relationship problems just by hearing “trust issues.”

You’ll be so deeply loved by a person with trust issues once they start trusting you. You’ll be loved and questioned at the same time, not because they WANT to doubt you, but because their past taught them that love isn’t forever. So even when you’re doing everything right, a small change in your tone, behaviour, or timing can trigger something you didn’t even know existed.

You’ll slowly learn that reassurance isn’t a one-time thing. It’s consistent. It’s repetitive. And the worst part… you’ll feel exhausted from proving your actions and your intentions over and over again, even when nothing is wrong. Some people slowly give up and leave to “protect” their mental health, without realizing how hard it will be for the person with trust issues to collect all the broken pieces of themselves AGAIN and start everything over. The ones who stay, start feeling tired, not because they don’t love them, but because they can’t fix what broke them. You can support, understand, and stay, but you can’t heal wounds you didn’t create.

But loving someone with trust issues teaches you patience in a way nothing else can. You start noticing the small victories, the moments they choose to trust you despite their fear, the times they open up instead of shutting down. Those moments mean everything.

Words like “love” and “hate” are heavy for someone with trust issues. And when they say something like “I love you,” they truly mean it. Imagine hearing “I love you” from someone with trust issues, a big win.

Still, love alone isn’t enough if they’re not willing to work on themselves. Because a relationship cannot survive on one person constantly proving and the other constantly doubting. And maybe that’s the hardest part… realizing your love can feel like home to them, but still not be enough to calm the storms in their head. So you stay, you try, you care, you reassure, hoping that one day, they won’t just feel loved, but safe too.
