Tho_oughts #3 : Pros and Cons of Using AI Tools in My Work as a Designer

I’m a graphic designer who mostly handles branding and illustration. Recently, I’ve transitioned into a full-time marketing designer role for a jewelry manufacturer. In this company, we don’t have many people , only one expert in each field. So I’m the design support for our customers (retail shops) that we supply. I create marketing materials, support, and ad visuals for them. Here are my pros and cons of using 4–5 AI tools for this work.
Pros: AI tools have been really helpful for me as a designer who mostly works alone. They save me a lot of time and help cover skills I haven’t fully mastered yet. I mainly focus on drawing and creating visuals for branding, while AI helps with photography and lighting concepts, video marketing production, and photo and video editing. For many of our products, we can produce a large number of high-quality videos in a very short time.
I have to say, AI tools really help us deliver marketing materials for our diverse clients efficiently.
Cons: (Disclaimer: this is just my opinion) As a designer, I admit I’ve become a bit lazy when it comes to brainstorming and starting from rough sketches. I often skip several design steps. I get information quickly, but I also find myself quickly disagreeing with some things. (Maybe the ideas aren’t as unique anymore, and it’s harder to come up with fresh ideas from my own mind.) I find it increasingly difficult to generate original ideas freshly from scratch. I feel my mind becoming dull and slow , like my brain is less sharp. I’m losing some of my creative thinking process and often feel burnt out from repetitive work.
Those are the biggest pros and cons for me so far. I’m still figuring things out, but what I’m doing to stay sharp is:
I still do design work like branding and drawing. I’ve started reading books and writing to keep my mind active. I keep seeking great visuals to inspire my eyes and mind, try to stay productive by improving creativity skills needed for client work, create things outside my comfort zone, and go on adventures to refresh myself.
Okay, that’s it — a quick share from my mind. Just pouring out my thoughts briefly here.
See you!
