With a quick count of cymbals, the simple yet precise drums of Back on 74 by Jungle come in. A production that turns you into the protagonist of a minimalist commercial for some product that simply makes you feel good, where everyone around you smiles in a kind of peace that spreads from one person to another.

The guitar steps in almost immediately with simple, joyful chords that already have you thinking about practicing them at home so you can show them off at your next gathering.

Then the voice appears, unafraid to speak about how beautiful nostalgia can be: memories of the past, the roads once traveled, the avenue where something beautiful simply happened. Is this voice purifying me? What am I even saying? It’s just a song… one that invites me back to the most intense moments of my youth. I think the past just winked at me.

And right here , right here, the chorus arrives, accompanied by the long-awaited entrance of the bass, essential in any production that channels disco. By now, the mirror ball has dropped from the ceiling. You can choose between your roller skates, your platform shoes, your flared pants, and why not, a big, voluminous afro. Meanwhile, sing along with me: “Go? Back on 74.” And pay attention to your right ear (because you won’t hear it on the left): the second voice gives you a spark of joy with “when I noticed you.” The first chorus closes with a harmonious “Oh, oh, oh-oh” that The Platters would have loved.

Then the lead voice returns, just like at the beginning, letting us walk down 74, enjoying what once was while understanding that now it lives only as a memory in our minds. A simple yet powerful line wraps around us: “Let it go.” It’s time to move forward, looking back at what was once home and is now just the past.

And then, as if nothing else mattered, silence takes over for a few seconds. Out of nowhere, angelic voices emerge, giving this journey into the past a lullaby-like ending.

Throughout the entire piece, there’s a mix that sweetens the ear, thanks to the prominence of the bass and drums. The cleanliness of the production lets you breathe easily as you take in the vocal harmonies, the precise transitions, and the way the sound travels from one ear to the other.

Without a doubt, one of the finest compositions Jungle has given us.
