Ilorin: A City I Have Grown to Love

Tipper Garage Bridge, Tanke, Ilorin.
I came to Ilorin in 2018 thinking I was just passing through. You know that feeling. When life says stay here for now, and you reply, okay, but just for a while.
Seven years later, I’m still here.
And somewhere between then and now, this city stopped being a place I stayed and became a place that held me.
The early days
When I arrived, everything felt unfamiliar. New streets. New faces. New silence. Ilorin didn’t overwhelm me, but it didn’t hug me either. It just… existed. Calm. Observant. Almost indifferent.
I remember walking around with that quiet uncertainty Nigerians know too well. That question we don’t always say out loud: Is this where my life will make sense?
At first, Ilorin felt slow. Too slow. Coming from a world where noise equals progress, the calm almost felt suspicious. I kept waiting for something dramatic to happen. It didn’t.
Instead, life started happening quietly.
Learning to live gently
Ilorin taught me how to live gently. Here, mornings don’t rush you out of bed aggressively. Evenings don’t fight for your attention. Life moves, but it gives you room to breathe. And when you’re used to chaos, that kind of softness can feel uncomfortable at first.
But slowly, I settled into it.
I built routines. I learned the roads. I learned when the city sleeps and when it wakes. I learned that peace can look boring, and boring can actually be healthy.
Not every place that shapes you will excite you. Some places are meant to calm you.
My mini flat, my small world
I live in a mini flat now. Nothing extravagant. But it’s mine. And that matters more than people realize.
That space represents prayers answered quietly. It represents independence. It represents a version of me that learned how to show up even when nobody was clapping.
I’ve cried in that space. I’ve rested there. I’ve laughed alone there. I’ve had moments of deep gratitude and moments of God, what am I even doing?
And Ilorin stayed constant through all of it.
Let’s be honest, it gets boring. Yes, Ilorin can be boring. Painfully boring sometimes. There are days when the quiet is too loud. Days when you want movement, excitement, something spontaneous. Days when you wonder if life is passing you by slowly. But I’ve learned something important.
Boredom is sometimes what peace looks like when you’re used to survival mode.
Ilorin doesn’t distract you endlessly. It leaves you alone with your thoughts. And that can be uncomfortable. But it’s also where growth happens.
Faith, people, and quiet belonging
One thing Ilorin gave me was grounding. Faith feels natural here. You hear the call to prayer. You hear church bells. You feel a rhythm that reminds you that life is bigger than your worries. It humbles you.
And the people. They don’t rush intimacy. But once you’re in, you’re in. There’s respect here. Boundaries. A kind of quiet kindness that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Over time, I stopped feeling like an outsider. I became someone with history here. Memories. Familiar faces. Places that mean something.
Who I became in this city
Some of the strongest versions of me were built in Ilorin. This city saw me grow up emotionally. It taught me patience. Contentment. Self-trust. It taught me how to sit with myself without running away. Ilorin didn’t rush my process. It let me unfold.
Some cities don’t give you wings. They give you roots.
Home, finally
Ilorin is not loud. It’s not glamorous. It won’t beg for your affection. But if you stay long enough, if you allow it, it becomes home in the most honest way. Not perfect. Not dramatic. Just steady.
This city watched me build a life slowly. Intentionally. Imperfectly. And now, when I think of home, I don’t think of a grand idea.
I think of this quiet city that stayed with me long enough for me to find myself.
Ilorin is home. And honestly, that’s more than enough for me.
