Clementine

“What did I do Clem? That made you ghost me?”

You ghosted me!”

“Are you serious right now?” Nicky practically screamed. “I waited on the roof — here — for you and you never answered my text!”

Clementine shook her head,

“No, I waited for your response forever and it never came!”

“I sent it Clem, I absolutely sent you a text to meet me and I waited until sundown for you. Until the fireflies started to show up on the roof.”

“Oh now you know they are fireflies and not moths that light up,” she smiled despite herself.

“Yes, I do!”

Nicky grinned and despite herself, Clementine smirked at his wolfish grin. That grin was how she got into so much trouble.

She remembered sitting at the rooftop bar, the hostess had just lit her candle and handed her a drink.

“The gentleman over there asked me to hand you this note,” The hostess grinned cheekily.

“The Tide Is High” by Blondie was playing and Clementine smiled at the words on the napkin:

You look stunning, the fire moths around you are illuminating your beauty.

She laughed at his faux pas and actually crooked her finger to invite him over to her table. His eyes were intent on her ever since she had gotten the napkin.

Nicky

“Fireflies, not fire moths!” she playfully corrected.

Nicky smiled that this gorgeous girl called him over to correct him.

“Does it matter if they illuminate your beauty?”

Clementine shrugged and he stared at her smooth shoulders.

“I guess not.”

“I would hope not!”

They laughed. He put his hand on the back of the chair opposite her.

“May I?’

She shrugged and he looked at her shoulders again.

Nicky watched as she shrugged her shoulders now, this time filled with tension.

“So show me the text that you sent,” she demanded.

“I said I sent it Clementine, I don’t need to prove anything. Show me that you never got the text if we are going to play that game.”

“You said you sent the text, so you have to prove it.”

“Look, I am not going to fight with you. You always want me to prove something, let’s just go where we are going. Are you going to the roof as well?

Her silence was so cold. Nicky pressed the button for himself, when the elevator stopped and shook violently.

They looked at each other with trepidation.
