The internet works a lot like a city.
Every house in a city needs an address so people can find it. Similarly, every device connected to a network — like your phone, laptop, or smart TV — needs an address too. This address is called an IP address.
Example:
192.168.1.1
Without IP addresses, data wouldn’t know where to go — just like mail without a home address.
IP Classes — Different Sizes of Cities
Not every network is the same size.
Some networks are huge like metropolitan cities, while others are small like neighborhoods. To organize this, IP addresses were divided into classes.

Class A — Mega Cities
Used for extremely large networks with millions of devices.
Class B — Big Towns
Designed for universities and large companies.
Class C — Small Neighborhoods
Common in homes, schools, and small offices.
Most home Wi-Fi networks today use Class C-style addressing.
What Is Subnetting?
Now imagine one giant city with no areas or streets. Everything would become messy and hard to manage.
Subnetting solves this problem.
It divides a large network into smaller sections called subnets — like dividing a city into neighborhoods.
eg: Main Network: 192.168.1.0/241
Subnets:
- HR →
192.168.1.0/26 - Finance →
192.168.1.64/26 - IT →
192.168.1.128/26
Each subnet becomes its own small neighborhood inside the larger network.
This makes networks:
- faster
- more organized
- easier to manage
In simple terms: IP addresses identify houses, IP classes define city size, and subnetting organizes the neighborhoods.
